This is an extinct volcano crater located along Rt 574 on the west side of the Snæfellsjökull National Park. You'll see it clearly from the main road. After taking the Saxholl turnoff, there is a free carpark area just below the crater along with a walking trail which ascends fairly steeply to the old crater rim.

The walk up to the rim isn't bad but the wind conditions were making it interesting at times during our visit. Seeing the interior of the crater was fine. However, much more impressive were the views of the surrounding grounds of the national park. This is what we remembered most from our short visit to Saxholl Crater. Allow 20 minutes for stops here, that should be sufficient if you have a busy schedule of places to see within the Snæfellsjökull National...

This is a fast visit. The crater has a great set of metal stairs that circle the wall making the climb pretty easy. There are many stairs and they look imposing but they are short easy steps to navigate up or down. They are also slip resistant so should be fine when they are wet as well. Snow or ice would be trickier. There is a bench halfway up to rest and regroup. Views from the top are amazing. The crater does not have a lake like the Kerid Crater but its interesting to climb none the less. Free parking, no WC at this location. Plan 10 minutes to climb...probably 30 min total. Wind does make the climb harder so use caution when...

We visited Sunday 15th September 2024.

If you have been to other craters like Kerid crater or Grabrok then this is not a must see and can be skipped. It is not as impressive as the other two, especially the views at the top. The viewing platform at the top is small, and you can't even walk around the whole crater.

The staircase leading up the mountain was the most impressive part for me.

Car park is free and was good quality. There are no toilets here.

Is it very windy at the top, be careful when going up or...
