Vestmannaeyjar (Western Islands) is an archipelago off Iceland’s south coast, formed by underwater volcanic eruptions. The youngest island, Surtsey, was formed in 1963. Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island. It has 2 volcanoes, Helgafell and Eldfell. Interactive displays at Eldheimar Museum, in Heimaey Town, chronicle Eldfell’s devastating 1973 eruption, when some 400 buildings were destroyed.

One of my favorite places in Iceland. The small island of Westman has a beautiful town that coexists with a volcano. You can still see the petrified lava dividing spaces with the houses.
At the top of it, you can feel the vapors from the volcano and warm your hands with them. Not to mention the colors of the rocks, which are a show on their own.

Spending a day on Vestmannaeyjar was one of the best travel days I've ever had. I did a circa-Island boat ride with Vestmannaeyjar Boat tours that was top quality, informative and scenic. I also found great food in a local bakery and had a great hike to the Eldfall volcano. Everyone was friendly and didn't seem burnt out on tourists, unlike in Reykjavik.
