Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is a stunning marine sanctuary located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, near Wandoor, about 29 km from Port Blair. Established in 1983, the park spans around 281.5 square kilometers and consists of 15 islands and several coral reefs. Its primary goal is to protect the rich marine biodiversity, including coral reefs, mangroves, and a variety of marine creatures. Key Attractions 1. Coral Reefs and Marine Life: The park is home to vibrant coral reefs, sea anemones, and various marine species like starfish, sea cucumbers, and mollusks. Visitors can also spot turtles, dugongs (sea cows), and occasionally dolphins. 2. Snorkeling and Scuba Diving: The park offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving, allowing visitors to explore the reefs and encounter exotic marine life up close. Jolly Buoy and Red Skin Islands are the most famous destinations for underwater activities. 3. Glass-Bottom Boat Rides: For those who prefer not to dive, glass-bottom boat rides offer a glimpse of the vibrant underwater ecosystem. 4. Island Excursions: Many of the islands within the park, such as Jolly Buoy Island, offer serene beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for picnics and relaxation. Conservation Efforts The park enforces strict rules to maintain the ecological balance, such as a ban on plastic and limited visitor access to islands like Jolly Buoy and Red Skin, which are alternately opened to the public. Fishing and extraction of coral are prohibited to protect marine life. Best Time to Visit The best time to visit is October to May, when the weather is favorable, and underwater visibility is excellent for snorkeling and diving. Monsoons (June to September) are avoided due to heavy rainfall and rough seas. This national park offers an extraordinary chance to witness the natural beauty of the Andaman Islands, both above and below the water, making it a must-visit for travelers and nature enthusiasts.

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is situated at South Andaman at Wandoor on bank of Indra crick 17-20 kms west of Port Blair. Its one hour journey by road from Port Blair. You have to travel over bumping road but it's scenic journey. State government transport is available to reach the place from Port Blair. The national park combined with multiple reserved islands where only one or two are open for visitors on extra cost per person. You can visit Jolly Bouy & Red Skin Islands from here as well. Obviously the Water is crystal clear here & you can found beautiful, scenic beaches all over. You can also enjoy marvelous marine life underwater. But be careful as Wandoor sea and its back water is dangerous to swim as surrounded by crocodiles. You can visit small Marine Enterpretation Center near the Jetty. Here you will get good information about Andaman marine life.

You can skip this if you are visiting Neil or Havelock as there is nothing much to do at either Jolly Buoy or Red skin. The boat which takes you there isn't that great too but the charges are exorbitant. At the same price you will have a ship ride with Nautika or Markuzz which is way superior. In my opinion just avoid this if it is through the private operator. If you can avail govt. Boat service for the same (Rs. 150 only) then it is good one time spend . Usually the private cab guys will not tell you about this economical option. If you are with family better to skip and spend time and money at Havelock and Neil for the same. There is a small marine museum as well at the shore which is good to spend time for 10 mins. (No ticket required)

Nice place but can be visited only with prior permit from forest department. Permit can be purchased from any agent from 4 days prior to visit. In peak season it is difficult to get permit easily. The Marine park is collection of 15 island of Andaman from which only 1 (either jolly buoy or red skin-depends on month of visit) can be visited. Jolly buoy island is rich in marine life Amazon coral reefs and marine animals. Snorkeling and glass bottom rides can be done here for which boat guys charge heavily but it worth the ammusment. Island is plastic free so no plastic bags or water bottles are allowed. One can rent a returnable water bottle here.
