పూర్వకాలంలో కలుషహారిణి అయిన గంగామాత తనలో స్నానం చేసిన వారందరి పాపాలను నశింపచేస్తుండటం వలన తనకు అంటిన పాప పంకి లాన్ని పోగొట్టుకొనే మార్గం చెప్పవలసిందిగా శ్రీహరిని ప్రార్ధిం చింది. అప్పుడు శ్రీ మహావిష్ణువు తన అంశతో ఉద్భ వించిన కృష్ణానది సముద్రంలో కలిసే సంగమ ప్రదేశం లో కాకి రూపంలో వెళ్లి స్నానం చెయ్యి. నీపాప తమస్సు పోయి హంసవలె మారతావని వరమిచ్చాడు. గంగాదేవి తన యందలి పాప తమస్సును కాకి వలె ధరించి కృష్ణా సాగ రసంగమ పవిత్ర ప్రదేశం లో మునిగింది. పాపప్రక్షాళన పొంది హంస వలె స్వఛ్ఛతను పొందింది. అంతటి మహిమ గల క్షేత్రం ఈ హంసల దీవి. ఎందరో మునులు ఈ ప్రాంతంలో తపస్సు చేసుకుంటూ సంచరించేవారని, అటువంటి పరమహం సలు సంచరించిన ప్రదేశం కాబట్టే ఈ ప్రాంతాన్ని హంసలదీవి అన్నారని ఒక కథనం.

ఆలయ విశేషాలు... ఈ తీర్థక్షేత్రంలో వెలసిన దైవం రుక్మిణీ సత్యభామా సమేత శ్రీ వేణుగోపాలస్వామి. ఈ ఆలయం ఒక రాత్రిలో దేవతలు నిర్మించిందిగా స్థలపురాణం. దేవాలయ నిర్మాణం పూర్త యి, గాలిగోపురం నిర్మిస్తుండగా తెల్లవారిపోయిందని, దేవ తలు వెళ్లి పోయారని, అందువల్ల అది అసంపూర్తిగా మిగిలి పోయిందని చెప్పేవారు. ఆ తరువాత దానిని ఐదంతస్తుల గాలిగోపురంగా నిర్మించారు. 1977లో శ్రీశ్రీశ్రీ త్రిదండి చినజీయరు స్వామి వారు దీన్ని ప్రారంభించారు.మౌర్య చక్రవర్తుల కాలంలో ఆలయ నిర్మాణం జరిగి ఉండ వచ్చని చరిత్రకారులు భావిస్తున్నారు. ఆలయ ముఖమండపం స్తంభాలమీద అనేక శాసనాలు మనకు కన్పిస్తాయి.

క్షేత్రపురాణం... శ్రీ వేణుగోపాలస్వామి వారి ప్రాదుర్భావాన్ని గూర్చి కథ ఒకటి జనశృతిగా ప్రాచుర్యంలో ఉంది. పూర్వకాలం ఈ ప్రాంతంలో ఒక పెద్ద పుట్ట ఉండేదట. స్వామి దానిలో ఉండేవాడట. మేతమేసిన ఆవులు ఆ పుట్ట దగ్గరకు వచ్చి స్వామికి పుట్టలోకి పాలు కార్చేవట. సాయంత్రం ఆవులు పాలు ఇవ్వకపోవడంతో అనుమానమొచ్చి, మాటువేసి కారణం కనిపెట్టారు గోపాలురు. ఆవులు పుట్ట పైకి వెళ్లి పాలుకార్చడం చూచి, కోపం ఆపుకోలేక, చెత్తంతా పోగు చేసి పుట్టమీద వేసినిప్పుపెట్టారట. పుట్టలోని స్వామికి వేడితగలడం, ఇంతలో ఒకరికి పూనకం వచ్చి స్వామి ఉన్న విషయాన్ని చెప్పడం, క్షమాభిక్ష కోరుకున్న భక్తులు స్వామివారి విగ్రహాన్ని ప్రతిష్టించి పూజలు నిర్వహించడం జరిగిపోయింది.కాలాంతరంలో ఆ విగ్రహం భిన్నమైపోగా, స్వామి గ్రామస్తులకు కలలో కన్పించి కాకరపఱ్ఱు మునసబు గారి దొడ్లో ఉన్నానని చెప్పడంతో గ్రామస్తులు వెళ్లి ఊరేగింపుగా స్వామి వారిని తీసుకొచ్చి ప్రతిష్టించారట. ఆ విగ్రహమే ఇప్పుడు పూజలందుకుంటున్నది. భిన్నమైన విగ్రహం ఇప్పటిక్కూడా అలంకరించబడిన మూలవిరాట్‌ ప్రక్కనే మనకు దర్శనమిస్తోంది.

ఈ ఆలయంలో వివాహం చేసుకొని, సాగరసంగమ ప్రదే శంలో సరిగంగ స్నానాలు చేస్తే ఆ జంటలు సుఖంగా నూరే ళ్ళు జీవిస్తారనేది భక్తుల విశ్వాసం. ఈ ఆలయంలో నిద్ర చే స్తే సంతానం లేనివారికి సంతానభాగ్యం కలుగు తుందని చెపుతారు. ఆలయం చుట్టూ ఉన్న కుడ్యాలలో ఎన్నో అంద మైన శిల్పాలు కొలువుదీరి ఉన్నాయి. ఆలయా నికి ఈశాన్యంలో పురాతన కట్టుబడితో కళ్యాణమండపం కన్పిస్తుంది.

ఉత్సవాలు... మాఘపౌర్ణమికి స్వామివారి కళ్యాణోత్సవం, కృష్ణాష్టమి, ధనుర్మాసం, ప్రత్యేక ఉత్సవాలు. కార్తీకమాసంలో సముద్ర స్నానం చేసిన వేలాదిమంది భక్తులు తప్పనిసరిగా స్వామిని దర్శిస్తారు.

ప్రత్యేకతలు... ఈ ఆలయం తుపానులు, ఉప్పెనల నుండి గ్రామస్తులను కాపాడుతూ వస్తోంది. 1864, 1977 ఉప్పెనల నుండి ఎందరో గ్రామస్తుల ప్రాణాలను కాపాడిన ఘనచరిత్ర ఈ ఆలయానిది. సుమారు 6, 7 వందల సంవత్సరాల క్రితం నిర్మించిన ఆలయమే అయినా ఉప్పెనలకు చెక్కుచెదరకుం డా నిలబడటమే కాకుండా, కొన్నివందల ప్రాణాలను నిల బట్టిన ఘనత ఈ ఆలయ సొంతం. ఇటువంటి గట్టి కట్టడా న్ని నిర్మించిన ఆ శిల్పులను ఒక్కసారి గుర్తుచేసుకొని జోహా ర్లు అర్పించాలి. శ్రీజనార్ధనస్వామి, శ్రీ రాజ్యలక్ష్మి, శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ నరసింహ స్వామి ఉపాలయాలు కూడా ఈ ఆలయంలో ఉన్నాయి. ఈ ఆలయానికి సమీపంలోనే బాలాత్రిపుర సుందరి, అన్నపూర్ణ సమేత కాశీ విశ్వేశ్వరాలయం కూడా ఉంది. ఆలయ ప్రాంగణం లో అక్కడక్కడ పడి ఉన్న కొన్ని శిథిల శిల్పాలు చెదిరిన మన చరిత్రకు సజీవ సాక్ష్యాలుగా కనబడతాయి.
