The Kopili River (also spelled Kupli) is a significant river in the northeastern Indian states of Meghalaya and Assam. Here are some interesting facts about the Kopili River: The Kopili River originates in the Meghalaya Plateau, specifically in the Jaintia Hills district. The river flows northwest through the Jaintia Hills and then enters the state of Assam, where it joins the Brahmaputra River. The Kopili River has several tributaries, including the Umngot, Umiam, and Umtru rivers. The Kopili River is harnessed for hydroelectric power generation, with the Kopili Hydroelectric Project located in the Jaintia Hills district. The Kopili River flows through scenic valleys and hills, offering breathtaking views and opportunities for boating and rafting. The Kopili River faces pollution challenges, particularly from industrial and agricultural activities Deforestation and land degradation in the surrounding areas have affected the river's water quality and ecosystem. Local organizations and government agencies are working to conserve the Kopili River and its ecosystem through initiatives such as reforestation, pollution control, and sustainable livelihood promotion.
