First things first - "Will I get to see a Rhino if I visit this place?" is not a question at all. Rather, you may ask "how many will I be able to see?" and that would make sense. This is probably the world's densest population of great Indian Rhinos - 104 of them in a ~39sqkm area and it's almost next to impossible to come out of the park without spotting atleast one of them !!! Location and Road : Pobitora is around 45km from Guwahati City and the roads are pretty decent (SH3) except for the final 1.5-2 kms. For some reason, Maps show about 2 hours for the journey but I was able to cover the distance in about 50 minutes time. Safari : Tourists will have 2 options - Elephant Safari and Gypsy Safari. Elephant Safari costs ₹500 per person (₹50 entry fee and ₹450 for elephant safari) and it's available only in the morning (6.30am start and 7.45am start). Gypsy safari is available throughout the day and it costs ₹1300 per Gypsy and it can accommodate 6 people. Would strongly recommend the elephant safari option as it's an unmatchable opportunity to go very close to the Rhinos at their own play grounds, a motor vehicle cannot offer you that luxury of going deep into the marshy grass lands !!! Pro tip : The best of the elephants are at the extreme front and extreme back, choose a decently tall elephant which is 2nd or 3rd from either ends !!! We were attacked by 2 Rhinos and it's these tall, senior elephants who chased them out - it was indeed a scary but thrilling experience !! Overall, a great experience. If you are in Assam and wants to see a Rhino at its own habitat, Pobitora is where you should go. Even Kaziranga cannot promise you such a rich experience (if you are looking only for Rhinos) because of the sheer size of it !!

Pobitora is a gem of a sanctuary, not very far from Guwahati and has the highest concentration of Rhinos in India. The park is about 30 km from Jorabat and that makes it extremely accessible. The roads were very good, but for small patches which were under construction. If you want to see Rhinos up close, opt for the elephant ride. The rides are at 0630 & 0730 in the morning, on all days. Pl be careful when you book online. Pl go to www.pobitorasafari.in for bookings. I booked on pobitrawildlifesanctuary.in and got fleeced. The official rates for the ride amounts to Rs. 510/ person in total. I was charged 950/ person by the site mentioned, for nothing!!! So, please be careful. The elephant ride was amazing. You get to see the Rhinos real close. They were almost domesticated and were pushed by our Mahout to get up and move, so that we could have a good look!! On Google Maps, go to the Elephant safari point, which is close to the Forest office. See the pictures attd. The elephant ride is for one hour and definitely worth it. We rode on an elephant called Vikram, who is a senior and takes the lead for the tour. He was gentle and extremely intelligent, responding very well to the Mahout. You can freshen up at the Forest IB, which has an amazing caretaker called Mr Nath. He gave us some amazing black tea and was extremely welcoming, despite being only a casual employee. Pobitora is extremely recommended and a must see, if you want to see Rhinos and don't want to go to Kaziranga. You'll not regret it.

A very good wildlife forest area near to the gateway of north east India. People may visit the place from guwahati or may stay at the place to enjoy the wildlife. Different types of resorts are available here for the tourists. The visitors may choose to enter the forest area with a jeep or by an elephant with reasonable price. Elephant safari is available only in the early morning time. Jeep safari is available from morning time to afternoon time. Visitors have to pay a entry fee here other than the safari fees. The wildlife sanctuary has different types of flora and fauna. The main animal found here is the rhino. Other than rhino, Buffalo, deer, fox, porcupine, rabbit, eagles are some major animals that tourists may see. The staff of the forest is very good and cooperative. The entire campus is clean and well maintained. There is a hanging bridge and a children park too. There is an option of boat safari within the campus for the tourists. There is a toilet separately for men and women which are not clean. Drinking water facility is also there. Dustbins are placed in different corners so that people can easily find them to throw unnecessary things. Parking area is very large and open which is free for all visitors. The entire campus within the forest area is plastic free. Overall a very beautiful wildlife area where tourists can have there quality times with the mother nature.

A wild life sanctuary basically for breeding of Rhinos. The internet says that the Rhinos overbred here resulting in a huge population and a few were shifted to other Reserve parks. I found this logic very true as rhinos are visible from open road, just 500 metres away and not in ones or twos but in herds alongwith baby rhinos. Since the sanctuary coexists with local villages, the cows also gaze in herds and sometiimes the cows do get killed by rhinos on encroachment issues, as reported. A pair of good binoculars and a camera with long optical zoom or tele is a must for this place. The sanctuary offers jeep safaris at moderate prices but I found it closed in June. This is also a home for the migratory birds during appropriate time. A find a few birds, mainly varieties of cranes and ducks but very less in number, the time being in June. An added advantage of the place is a museum dedicated to black magic items practised in the nearby village called Mayong which is famous for its black magic activities, which still exists in low scale but reportedly only for good cause and treatments. While visiting Pobitora one has to cross the Mayong village enroute. There are a couple of resorts near the sanctuary but can't say anything about how they are booked, perhaps by the local travel agents of Guwahati. All in all, a highly recommended place to visit in half a day.

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Assamese district of Morigaon, 50 kilometers to the east of Guwahati. This sanctuary, which spans more than 38 kilometers, is distinctive due to the large number of rhinos that are protected there. The two other significant reserves for the preservation of Indian rhinos are Manas Wildlife Sanctuary and Kaziranga National Park. Pobitara is one of these reserves. Its marshy swamplands provide the ideal habitat for wild buffalo, rhinos, and boars alike. Jeep safaris navigate through the rough roads that have been specially built for this purpose. With 200 migratory birds, 81+ rhinos, and some interesting reptiles, this Sanctuary is a must-visit on any wildlife enthusiast’s bucket list. The sanctuary offers both jeep safaris and elephant safaris. Mammals: Asiatic buffalos, golden jackal, wild boar and feral water buffalo. Barking deer, Indian leopard and rhesus macaque Birds: Yellow Footed Green Pigeon, Green Billed Malkoha, Oriental Turtle Dove, White Breasted Water hen, Black necked Stork, Asian Koel, Grey headed Lapwing, Little Cormorant, Lesser Adjutant, Spotted Dove Nearest Airport: Guwahati airport How to reach: 2 hours from Guwahati airport Famous for: One of best place to see Indian One Horned Rhino Best time to visit: November to March
