We visited Pobitora wildlife Sanctuary after spending 3 nights in Manas. Pobitora is closer to Guwahati but about 5.5 hours drive from Manas. We had booked the jeep safari using an website and landed up paying substantially high price. Hence, please avoid booking online unless you book from the website of the forest dept./national park. Other websites have names which will make you feel like you are booking from Govt. / National park portal but in the end you will find it is a private entity and charging you a very high price. We paid 3500 (Safari is only 1 hour) (without camera charges) against the standard price of 1800 and there are always Jeeps available on the counter at Pobitora and hence be assured of getting a Jeep if the Sanctuary Gate is open (Supply is far higher than Demand). The best thing is to request your resort to make arrangement for Jeep safari and it will be the actual cost charged by the National Park. Unlike Manas, the visitor having an SLR camera has to pay 500 per camera and you have to book at the time of booking. Please tell your resort that you are carrying an SLR camera otherwise you will be paying cash to the gypsy driver. If you have to pay cash, it will be without any receipt and the Gypsy guy is most likely to pocket the same. It happened in our case. Hence, please inform your resort to do the booking for you. Booking in advance is not at all necessary here. The demand for elephant safari (6.15AM to 7.15AM) is a bit high and hence has to be booked the previous day. Our resort (Arya near the entry gate) did the booking of elephant ride on the previous night and it was as per the Govt. rate. In the Jeep safari (lot of dust), you can see wild buffalo, Chitals, a few Rhinos, many birds, (we missed a nightjar which was sitting on the road and went into the bush and we could not trace it). It was a pleasant ride from 3 to 4 PM. Good sighting of animals as Pobitora is a very small park unlike Manas. The elephant ride is a must if you want to see Rhinos from close quarters. The ride was pleasant and it took us into the grazing field of Rhinos and wild buffalos. We really enjoyed our trip to...

Good experience Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary offers a unique and rewarding wildlife experience, particularly renowned for its significant population of Indian rhinoceros. It's not the largest or most well-known sanctuary in India, but its compact size and high rhino density make it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts. It offers a more intimate and accessible experience compared to some of the larger, more sprawling parks. The sanctuary's main draw is undoubtedly the chance to see rhinos in their natural habitat. [Describe the landscape - e.g., grasslands, swamps, riverine forests]. This habitat is ideal for rhinos, and Pobitora's conservation efforts have contributed to a healthy population. [Mention other wildlife that can be seen in the sanctuary - e.g., various species of deer, wild buffalo, birds]. While the rhino is the star, the sanctuary supports a diverse ecosystem. Exploring Pobitora typically involves jeep safaris, which offer the best chance of spotting wildlife. [Describe the safari experience - e.g., How long are the safaris? How close do you get to the animals? Are there guides who provide information about the wildlife and the ecosystem?]. The thrill of encountering a rhino in the wild is an unforgettable experience. [Mention any specific features of the sanctuary - e.g., watchtowers, elephant rides (if available and ethical), a visitor center]. [Mention any research or conservation efforts being conducted in the sanctuary]. [Mention any practical considerations for visitors - e.g., best time to visit, what to bring, accommodation options near the sanctuary, permit requirements]. [Mention any ethical guidelines for wildlife viewing - e.g., maintaining a safe distance, minimizing noise, respecting the animals' natural behavior]. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary offers a focused and rewarding wildlife experience. It's a place where you have a very good chance of seeing Indian rhinos in their natural environment, and where you can appreciate the beauty and diversity of the natural world. It's a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts and anyone interested in...

First things first - "Will I get to see a Rhino if I visit this place?" is not a question at all. Rather, you may ask "how many will I be able to see?" and that would make sense. This is probably the world's densest population of great Indian Rhinos - 104 of them in a ~39sqkm area and it's almost next to impossible to come out of the park without spotting atleast one of them !!! Location and Road : Pobitora is around 45km from Guwahati City and the roads are pretty decent (SH3) except for the final 1.5-2 kms. For some reason, Maps show about 2 hours for the journey but I was able to cover the distance in about 50 minutes time. Safari : Tourists will have 2 options - Elephant Safari and Gypsy Safari. Elephant Safari costs ₹500 per person (₹50 entry fee and ₹450 for elephant safari) and it's available only in the morning (6.30am start and 7.45am start). Gypsy safari is available throughout the day and it costs ₹1300 per Gypsy and it can accommodate 6 people. Would strongly recommend the elephant safari option as it's an unmatchable opportunity to go very close to the Rhinos at their own play grounds, a motor vehicle cannot offer you that luxury of going deep into the marshy grass lands !!! Pro tip : The best of the elephants are at the extreme front and extreme back, choose a decently tall elephant which is 2nd or 3rd from either ends !!! We were attacked by 2 Rhinos and it's these tall, senior elephants who chased them out - it was indeed a scary but thrilling experience !! Overall, a great experience. If you are in Assam and wants to see a Rhino at its own habitat, Pobitora is where you should go. Even Kaziranga cannot promise you such a rich experience (if you are looking only for Rhinos) because of the sheer size of it !!

Pobitora is a gem of a sanctuary, not very far from Guwahati and has the highest concentration of Rhinos in India. The park is about 30 km from Jorabat and that makes it extremely accessible. The roads were very good, but for small patches which were under construction. If you want to see Rhinos up close, opt for the elephant ride. The rides are at 0630 & 0730 in the morning, on all days. Pl be careful when you book online. Pl go to www.pobitorasafari.in for bookings. I booked on pobitrawildlifesanctuary.in and got fleeced. The official rates for the ride amounts to Rs. 510/ person in total. I was charged 950/ person by the site mentioned, for nothing!!! So, please be careful. The elephant ride was amazing. You get to see the Rhinos real close. They were almost domesticated and were pushed by our Mahout to get up and move, so that we could have a good look!! On Google Maps, go to the Elephant safari point, which is close to the Forest office. See the pictures attd. The elephant ride is for one hour and definitely worth it. We rode on an elephant called Vikram, who is a senior and takes the lead for the tour. He was gentle and extremely intelligent, responding very well to the Mahout. You can freshen up at the Forest IB, which has an amazing caretaker called Mr Nath. He gave us some amazing black tea and was extremely welcoming, despite being only a casual employee. Pobitora is extremely recommended and a must see, if you want to see Rhinos and don't want to go to Kaziranga. You'll not regret it.
