Tilinga Mandir, Assam

The Tilinga Mandir nestles in a small town which is 7km fare from Tinsukia District of Assam, Bordubi. It is a very famous Shiva temple in Upper Assam. Tilinga means ‘bell’ in Assamese and mandir means ‘temple’. This temple has the largest collection of bells and has made it to the Limca Book of World Records for hosting the largest collection of bells of all types in this temple. There are hundreds and thousands of bells of all sizes in bronze, brass, copper and aluminium that are tied to the bog peepal tree and on its various branches. This temple is another tourist attraction of Assam Tourism.

When we talk of the Tilinga Mandir and Bordubi Tinsukia, the presence of the tea tribe which were brought by the British colonial planters is very strong and worth a mention. They are found in every district of Assam. This tribe is one of the most exploited and backward tribes in India. However newer generations are comparatively educated. Karam Puja is the most important festivals of the tea tribe communities of Assam with a view to propitiate “Mother of Earth”- the goddess of creation. It is celebrated in the mid of August on the night of ‘Bhado Ekadasi’ basically an agriculture related festival. And their famous dance performance in the night of Karam Puja is known as ‘Jhumair Nritya’. Basically a group dance performance by the rhythm of ‘Dhol’ and ‘Madal’ by a group of young man and women.

The history of this temple goes back to 1965 nearly half a century where tea garden workers of this area noticed a ‘Shiv Linga’ emerge from the ground near this banyan tree. The administrators of the garden then suggested that a small temple should be built here. This temple is as spiritually and mystically strong as any other temple. Feet away from the mystical tree there are more than a hundred Shiva tridents carelessly speared into the sand and most of them are packed together in one place. Thousands of people from the various places comes to this temple and offers their prayer and ties a bell to the banyan tree.

According to Hindu Mythology ‘Monday’ is considered as ‘Lord Shiva’s’ day and therefore every Monday a huge number of people gather here to worship Lord Shiva. If you do plan to visit ‘Tilinga Mandir’ for the first time then ‘Monday’ should be the day. There is a belief that if someone hangs a bell from one of the branches of the tree with any wish in mind their wishes comes true. Specially the young boys and girls come together and offer their wishes and prayer’s together. Initially when people came to pray here, they promised to come back and present a bell to the temple if their prayers were answered. From small ones, which might weigh more than 5grams to heavy 55 kilo ones, a whole range of bells hang in the temple’s premises.

How to reach The Tilinga Mandir:

By Air: nearest airport is Mohanbari airport, Dibrugarh. You can also reach the temple by private car or bus.

By train: Nearest station is Tinsukia town station. From there this temple is well connected by bus to Bordubi where the temple is situated.

Places to look around: The roadway to Bordubi from Tinsukia or Dibrugarh district is a real delight for visitors who love greenery. Throughout the way you can enjoy lush green Tea Gradens of Upper Assam until your eyes get tired.

The surrounding of the mandir is very serene...

Situtaed at Bordubi, a small town 7km fare from Tinsukia District of Assam the Tilinga Mandir is a famous Shiva Temple in upper Assam. Tilinga means "bell" in Assamese and mandir means "temple" .This Bell Temple is as spiritually and mystically strong as any other temple. There are hundreds and thousands of bells of all sizes in bronze, brass, copper and aluminum that are tied to the big peepal tree and on its various branches. There are more than a hundred Siva tridents carelessly speared into the sand here and there. Most of them are packed together in one place, a few feet away from the mystical tree. It is believed that if you have a wish and you pray to Lord Shiva for fulfilling the wish , your wish will be granted by lord Shiva. Only thing is that you have to determine to donate a bell at the this temple. The temple is nearly half a century old. "In 1965, the tea garden workers of this area noticed a 'Shiva Linga' emerge from the ground near this banyan tree. The administrators of the garden then said that a small temple should be built here. "Initially when people came to pray here, they promised to come back and present a bell to the temple if their prayers were answered. It was a matter of belief. "With time, more and more people came to know of this and started tying bells on the arms of this grand tree when their prayers got answered. From small ones, which might not weigh more than 50 grams to heavy 55 kilo ones, a whole range of bells hang in the temple's premises. "There are so many bells and year after year the numbers only keep increasing. Some of them fall off but since the devotees have gifted them, temple management don't throw them. Temple management store them in gunny bags and keep them in a corner of the premises of the temple.

Many people even present pigeons to the temple when their wish gets fulfilled. It's generally a norm that people either present a 'trishul', a pigeon or a bell in a Shiva temple when their prayers are answered. Devotees use to tie a tilinga (bell) at the branches of a giant peepal tree to fulfil their wishes. The fame of this temple with all its mysterious power spread far and wide when the pilgrims discovered that their wishes and prayers under the tree actually came true. People from various parts of India who heard about this temple have visited this temple. According to Hindu Mythology "Monday" is considered as "Lord Siva's" day and therefore every Monday a huge number of people gather here to worship Lord Siva.

This was my first visit and found very peaceful. In Assamese language, Tilinga means Bell. You can see lacs of bells all around that's why they call it as Tilinga Mandir. People believes that Lord Shiva listen to their wishes and each bells represent the fulfilled wish.

The temple you are referring to is Tilinga Mandir, located in Bordubi, Tinsukia district, in the state of Assam, India. It is a small Hindu temple known for its large collection of bells. Many people visit this temple from all over Assam and other parts of India to seek blessings and fulfil their wishes.

The temple is situated amidst a tea garden, and it takes approximately 2.5 hours to drive from the nearest city, Dibrugarh, to reach this peaceful place. When you arrive, you will be amazed to see tons of bells hanging on the border walls of the temple. Visitors tie bells once their wishes are fulfilled, which creates a beautiful and melodious sight.

The main deity worshipped in this temple is the tree. However, in recent times, some idols have been placed here as well. The serene atmosphere and the good vibes of the place make it an excellent destination for those seeking peace and spiritual solace.

If you plan to buy something from the vendors for your offering in the temple, it is advisable to double-check the prices and prefer prepaid payment to avoid any confusion or discrepancies.

While Tilinga Mandir is a popular and revered place, it is also in need of improvement. It is suggested that the concerned government department takes suitable measures to renovate and conserve such famous and glorious places to maintain their cultural and historical significance.

Overall, Tilinga Mandir is a unique and fascinating temple in Assam, known for its abundance of bells and the faith and belief of its visitors. It is definitely worth a visit, especially if you are in Upper Assam.

Awesome peaceful place... Lots of bells... Good vibe... But before you buy something from the vendors for your offering in the temple, always double check the price and prefer prepaid payment.
