Nice Museum

The Birla museum is located within the Birla temple complex. It is a private museum with a few sculptures from archaeological sites around Bhopal. Although the collections of statues is quiet decent, there are no information boards giving adequate details for better appreciation. Non the less it is worth while visiting the museum if one has come to the...

This museum is part of the Birla Mandir complex which holds a Lakshmi Narayan Temple and a shrine to Shiva-Parvati. This is one of about 14 temples built by the Birla families at different places and was built to fill a void as Bhopal did not have many temples. Like most of the other modern temples built by the Birlas, the Birla Mandir is magnificently constructed and brightly painted. The temple complex is worth visiting for its location at Arera Hills offering a panoramic view of the Lower Lake. From here you can see Bhopal stretching from minarets of the old city to the modern areas around the lakes. The Birla Museum houses a small but selective display of fine stone sculpture, informatively displayed with explanatory panels in English in the main galleries, most of them seventh to 12th century statues. The sculptures show Shiva, Vishnu and Shakti. Especially impressive are the Varaha Avatar in the Vishnu Gallery which has good works showing Lord Vishnu and his avatars, the Devi gallery with various goddesses including a superb Chamunda, finely carved voluptuous apsaras and fertility figures, and the Shiva Gallery with some beautifully carved reliefs of Uma-Maheshwar on Mount Kailash. It also has a good selection of archaeological finds from...

The Museum exudes tranquility with its abundance of charming stone sculptures, ancient coins, and captivating artworks. It offers a glimpse into the evolution of mankind from its earliest beginnings to the late 18th and 19th centuries. Adjacent to the renowned Birla Temple, this meticulously preserved museum is a haven of serenity. Nestled within its premises is a captivating garden adorned with a multitude of timeless statues. The museum's impeccable upkeep ensures a serene atmosphere, making it an ideal destination to explore. Don't forget to note the museum's operating hours, which conclude at 7:00 P.M. during summer and 6:30 P.M. during other seasons, ensuring ample time to visit before closing. Although the museum may have a slight shortfall in the number of ancient artifacts, I still rate it a commendable 4 out of 5 stars.
