Padri Ki Haveli — Attraction in Bihar

Padri-Ki-Haveli ("Mansion of Padre"), also known as Visitation of the blessed Virgin Mary, it is the oldest church in Bihar. When Roman Catholics arrived in Bihar, they built a small church in 1713 at a place now known as Padri ki haweli..The current church was re-designed by a Venetian architect Tirreto in 1772. He came from Kolkata to design this church. The foundation stone of this huge church has a dimension of 70 feet in length, 40 feet wide and 50 feet in height...

This Church was constructed in 1772. The church is the oldest Christian shrine of Bihar. The foundation stone of this 70-feet- long,40-feet-wide and 50-feet-high monument was designed and completed by Venetian architect Tirreto from Calcutta. In the quarrel between the English traders in Patna and Nawab Mir Kasim, the ruler of Bengal, on June 25, 1763, the Haveli was pillaged by the Nawab's soldiers for its treasures. The ancient records were destroyed and burnt. The structure was also attacked during the first war of Independence, in 1857. Today, the monument stands as an architectural wonder with intricate details which can be seen in few other churches of India.

Nawab Mir Qasim destroyed this church because of the quarrel with the British traderson 25 June 1763. Ancient records were destroyed and burnt consequently. Later, in 1857 during the Great Indian Rebellion again this church suffered with many damages.

Today, the monument stands as an architectural wonder with intricate details which can be seen in few other churches of India.

Beautiful.. Padri ki Haveli also known as St Mary’s Church, is the oldest church in Patna, and indeed, Bihar. While the church was first built in 1713, the structure that we see today was designed by a Venetian architect, Tirreto, in 1772. The church has withstood many attacks, including by Nawab Mir Qasim in 1763, and during the First War of Independence in 1857. Although the Gothic building has many modern touches, it is largely well preserved and is a must-visit for those interested in history and heritage monuments. Earlier known as Mangle’s tank, the lake was built in 1856-75 (though some say it is more than 200 years old). During the digging of the lake, an old brick wall was found which is thought to have been ruins of the ancient city of Pataliputra. A fair is held here on New Year’s Day, drawing as many as 10,000 revelers. The administration has plans to clean up the lake and develop it as a tourist destination with facilities...

Bus service available from Any Disctict of Bihar .Nestled in the greenery of Patna just off the Patna saheb road highway is is the Parumal Seminary on a huge sprawling campus. I attended a wedding at the Church .One gets a Feeling of peace . With high ceiling and open air the church has an imposing altar . There is a shop with related mementoes . I picked up a CD of religious songs which were appreciated by friends of the family ( though i do not know Malyalam) .
