Rabindra Bhawan is one of the major tourist attractions near the city of Bhagalpur. Rabindra Bhawan, also known as Tilha Kothi is a part of the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University. It is situated on a mound and the structure of this magnificent monument is beautiful. The Kothi is said to be associated with Augustus Cleveland, Warren Hastings, his wife Rosa Hastings and Raja Chet Singh of the princely state of Oudh in the Colonial era. The most famous association of Rabindra Bhawan is with the great writer, poet and activist of India, Shri Rabindranath Tagore. In the year 1910, Rabindranath Tagore travelled to Bhagalpur for a programme and stayed in the Tilha Kothi. At that time, the Kothi was the residence of then collector Augustus Cleveland of Bhagalpur. Rabindranath Tagore penned a few verses of his internationally renowned and acclaimed creation ‘Geetanjali’ in the Tilha Kothi. After Independence, the Tilha Kothi was renamed as Rabindra Bhawan in honour of Rabindranath Tagore.
Rabindra Bhawan is also surrounded by lush greenery in addition to its great historical significance. It offers a great view of the surrounding landscape from its elevated floors. The building is currently used as the official office of the Archaeological department of TM Bhagalpur University and is believed to be the centre of excellence in the University. During winters, the morning fog and mist turn the view from the monument in a breath-taking landscape.
