Chandigarh, the β€˜City Beautiful’ situated in the foothills of Shivaliks is blessed with a climate that is suitable to accommodate number of species of flora of different climatic regions. It is worthwhile setting up a Botanical Garden here with a purpose to conserve the flora of the region as well as those exotic and near extinct species. With this background, Chandigarh Administration has established a Botanical Garden near village Sarangpur. This garden spreads over 176 acres of land.

The foundation stone was laid on 30th May 2002 by Lt. General (Retd.) J.F.R. Jacob, the then Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh. This garden has been connected with the nature reserve known as Patiala-ki-Rao forest through a causeway. Patiala-ki-Rao forest spreads over 350 acres of land. General (Retd.) Dr. S. F. Rodrigues, the then Governor of Punjab & Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh, the champion of the cause of environment and keen nature lover, guided the project through his constant inspiration and guidance. He inaugurated the garden on 2nd January 2007.

Now the garden has fully developed and one of the biggest garden in this region and also in asia.

It has multiple entrance but two are main it has front side entrance from village khuda lahora and backside entrance from village dhanas.

There are so many various sections with the proper descriptions in the garden like medicinal plant garden, Bambusetum, Ficus grove, Arboretum, Ornamental/flowering tree section, Pinetum, Palmatum, Sacred Grove, Cactus & succulent section, Aquatic plants section, Rare plant section, Tropical rain forest section, Bulbous section, Japanese garden, Nutrition garden etc.

It is worth for those who have inrested in botany or nature and research works.

Other salient features of the botanical garden:- Office-cum-nature interpretation centre, Roads and pathways, Lake, Water bodies, Meditation huts-cum-rain shelters, Nursery-cum-research block, Public utility services, Cafetaria, Nature reserve/Nature park etc.

This is very neat, clean, well maintained greenery and secure places for play, walk and jogging for visitors.

Just a suggestion that they must have open cactus garden for public which is closed.

Thanks for the chandigarh administration that we have one of the best and Asia's biggest garden...

This garden when fully developed would be one of the biggest in this region.

The garden consists of 15 Botanical Sections. The primary aim of setting up of Botanical Garden is to promote research, education, ex-situ conservation and to spread awareness about our floral heritage. In addition, the garden would help promote eco-tourism in Chandigarh. Various sections in the Garden are:-

Medicinal Plants Garden:Β Medicinal Plants Garden/ Herbal Garden has been developed over 40 acres of land. More than 75 species of medicinal trees and 55 species of medicinal shrubs, herbs & climbers have already been planted in this section. Tree species like Harar, Bahera, Amla, Neem, Arjun, Maulsari, Bael, Kathal, Sandalwood, Kachnar, Camphor, Lasura, Goolar, Rudraksha, Jamun, Sita Ashok, Guggul, Putranjeeva etc. have been planted alongwith about 55 varieties of medicinal herbs like Giloy, Akarkara, Gokhru, Ghritkumari, Ashwagandha, Sarpagandha, Tulsi, Mehndi, Kalmegh, Bhringraj, Mandukapami, Brahmi,...

This is one of the best maintained Botanical garden I have visited in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. It is the main attraction of Chandigarh and the garden area is very large .There are so many varieties of plants and trees. When sometimes i may get tired and bored I come here and feel every peaceful and calm. I come here in morning do meditation at the lake inside it. Children can have best time playing in the lawn. Roads in the Botonical Garden are well maintained and many sports person do exercise and running here. Many people come here in morning and evening to consume fresh air. I love this place not because its beautiful but also because it is out of city and pollution from vehicles. There is a number of things to see like solar garden, lake is beautiful. Came to know that the highlight of the Botanical Garden is the lake, which gives the visitors a good view. There is many species of flowers along with rare plant species, which is a major attraction of the place. Nice to take pics in such a serene place.

Chandigarh is a city of parks and gardens and a visit to the Chandigarh botanical garden completes the icing on the cake. A short drive from PGI this was my final engagement in my tryst with the city. The garden is a vast strech of greenry with dense foliage to open grassland. Beautiful trees lining the walkway offer relief from the beating sun. The ultimate attraction is the cactus 🌡 park. With 124 species of cactus under a single roof , the sight was exhilarating and astonishing. Watch this if you feel the cactus is just a lazy shrub. Another area of interest was the aquatic section with over a dozen kinds of beautiful plants in the esthatically designed ponds. The place is humming with people walking and exercising in the mornings and evenings. Saw little kids going through rigorous Karate πŸ₯‹ training under a watchful ustaad in the evening. Entry is free. No eatery inside so carry food.
