Chandigarh, the βCity Beautifulβ situated in the foothills of Shivaliks is blessed with a climate that is suitable to accommodate number of species of flora of different climatic regions. It is worthwhile setting up a Botanical Garden here with a purpose to conserve the flora of the region as well as those exotic and near extinct species. With this background, Chandigarh Administration has established a Botanical Garden near village Sarangpur. This garden spreads over 176 acres of land.
The foundation stone was laid on 30th May 2002 by Lt. General (Retd.) J.F.R. Jacob, the then Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh. This garden has been connected with the nature reserve known as Patiala-ki-Rao forest through a causeway. Patiala-ki-Rao forest spreads over 350 acres of land. General (Retd.) Dr. S. F. Rodrigues, the then Governor of Punjab & Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh, the champion of the cause of environment and keen nature lover, guided the project through his constant inspiration and guidance. He inaugurated the garden on 2nd January 2007.
Now the garden has fully developed and one of the biggest garden in this region and also in asia.
It has multiple entrance but two are main it has front side entrance from village khuda lahora and backside entrance from village dhanas.
There are so many various sections with the proper descriptions in the garden like medicinal plant garden, Bambusetum, Ficus grove, Arboretum, Ornamental/flowering tree section, Pinetum, Palmatum, Sacred Grove, Cactus & succulent section, Aquatic plants section, Rare plant section, Tropical rain forest section, Bulbous section, Japanese garden, Nutrition garden etc.
It is worth for those who have inrested in botany or nature and research works.
Other salient features of the botanical garden:- Office-cum-nature interpretation centre, Roads and pathways, Lake, Water bodies, Meditation huts-cum-rain shelters, Nursery-cum-research block, Public utility services, Cafetaria, Nature reserve/Nature park etc.
This is very neat, clean, well maintained greenery and secure places for play, walk and jogging for visitors.
Just a suggestion that they must have open cactus garden for public which is closed.
Thanks for the chandigarh administration that we have one of the best and Asia's biggest garden...
