सरगुजा की आराध्या देवी मां महामाया की कृपा से इस अंचल में सुख-समृद्धि व वैभव सदा विद्यमान रही है। रियासतकालीन राजधानी व संभाग मुख्यालय अंबिकापुर के शीर्षांचल पर स्थित पहाड़ी में मां महामाया व विंध्यवासिनी देवी विराजमान हैं। यह लाखों श्रद्धालुओं की आस्था का प्रतीक है। महामाया मां को अंबिका देवी भी कहा गया है।

इनके नाम पर ही रियासतकालीन राजधानी का नामकरण विश्रामपुर से अंबिकापुर हुआ। प्रचलित दंत कथा के अनुसार अंबिकापुर में मां महामाया का धड़ जबकि बिलासपुर के रतनपुर में उनका सिर स्थापित है। मराठा सैनिकों ने इसे सिर को धड़ से अलग कर रतनपुर तक पहुंचाया था। इस दौरान सभी सैनिकों का दैवी कृपा से संहार हो गया था।

सरगुजा महाराजा बहादुर रघुनाथशरण सिंहदेव ने विंध्यासिनी देवी की मूर्ति को विंध्याचल से लाकर मां महामाया के साथ प्राण-प्रतिष्ठा करा स्थापित कराया। वहीं मां महामाया की मूर्ति की प्राचीनता के संबंध में स्पष्ट रूप से कोई उल्लेख नहीं है। इस संबंध में अलग-अलग दंत कथा प्रचलित है।

सरगुजा के वरिष्ठ साहित्यकार स्व. कमलकिशोर पांडेय ने मौखिक इतिहास का हवाला देते हुए बताया था कि मंदिर के निकट ही श्रीगढ़ पहाड़ी पर मां महामाया व समलाया देवी की स्थापना की गई थी। समलेश्वरी देवी को उड़ीसा के संबलपुर से श्रीगढ़ के राजा लाए थे। सरगुजा में मराठा सैनिकों के आक्रमण से दहशत में आए दो बैगा में से एक ने महामाया देवी तथा दूसरे ने समलेश्वरी देवी को कंधे पर उठाकर भागना शुरू कर दिया था।

इसी दौरान घोड़े पर सवार सैनिकों ने उनका पीछा किया। इस दौरान एक बैगा महामाया मंदिर स्थल पर तथा दूसरा समलाया मंदिर स्थल पर पकड़ा गया। इसके बाद सैनिकों ने दोनों की हत्या कर दी। इस कारण महामाया मंदिर व समलाया मंदिर के बीच करीब 1 किलोमीटर की दूरी है। वहीं प्रदेश के जिन स्थानों पर महामाया मां की मूर्ति है उसके सामने ही समलेश्वरी देवी विराजमान हैं।

ऐतिहासिक दस्तावेज बताते हैं कि 17वीं सदी तक मराठों का अभ्यूदय हो चुका था और वे पूरे भारत पर राज करना चाहते थे। सन् 1758 में बिंबाजी भोसले के नेतृत्व में सरगुजा में मराठा आक्रमण का उल्लेख है। मराठों की सेना गंगा की तरफ जाते हुए इस राज्य में आई। मराठों का उद्देश्य केवल नागपुर से काशी और गया के तीर्थ मार्ग को निष्कंटक बनाना था।

इसलिए संभव है कि आक्रमण अंबिकापुर के श्रीगढ़ में भी हुआ हो। दंत कथा के अनुसार मराठा सैनिकों ने मूर्तियों को अपने साथ ले जाना चाहा, लेकिन वे इसमें सफल नहीं हो पाए। अंत में उन्होंने मूर्ति का सिर काट लिया और रतनपुर की ओर चल पड़े। लेकिन दैवीय प्रकोप से हर मील पर रुकते ही एक की मौत हो जाती।

फिर दूसरा सैनिक सिर को लेकर आगे बढ़ता और अगले मील पर उसकी भी मौत हो जाती। रतनपुर तक पहुंचते तक उनका पूरी तरह से संहार हो गया। उनकी सोच मूर्ति को नागपुर तक ले जाने की थी, लेकिन वे सफल नहीं हो सके।

कलचुरि कालीन महामाया मंदिर में सिर प्रतिस्थापित रतनपुर स्थित कलचुरिकालीन महामाया मंदिर में अंबिकापुर की मां महामाया का सिर प्रतिस्थापित किया गया। रतनपुर के महामाया मंदिर में नीचे की ओर से देखने पर दो सिर स्पष्ट रूप से दिखाई देते हैं। रतनपुर मंदिर के पुजारी का दो सिर के संबंध में मानना है कि एक महालक्ष्मी व दूसरा महासरस्वती का है।

लेकिन अंबिकापुर की प्रचलित कथा का जिक्र करने पर उन्होंने भी इस सच्चाई को स्वीकार किया। यहां मां महामाया के दर्शन करने के पश्चात रतनपुर-बिलासपुर मार्ग पर स्थापित भैरव बाबा के दर्शन करने पर ही पूजा पूर्ण मानी जाती है। इस दर्शन से श्रद्धालुओं की सभी मनोकामना पूरी होती हैं।

शारदीय नवरात्र पर सिर होता है प्रतिस्थापित अंबिकापुर स्थित मां महामाया देवी व समलेश्वरी देवी का सिर हर वर्ष परंपरानुरूप शारदीय नवरात्र की अमावस्या की रात में प्रतिस्थापित किया जाता है। नवरात्र पूजा के पूर्व कुम्हार व चेरवा जनजाति के बैगा विशेष द्वारा मूर्ति का जलाभिषेक कराया जाता है।
