The Mama Bhanja Temple is a temple of Lord Shiva is located in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh. The temple is attributed to the two members of the family of Naga dynasty, the maternal uncle (Mama) and the nephew (Bhanja), from where it gets its name. It is visited by a lot of devotees all around the year. Other than being a place of worship, it also has an interesting architecture.

The temple is fifty feet high. The temple is built upon a moulded base. It has been well protected over the years with the help of a curvilinear shikara that stands above it, protecting it. The mandapa, however, being quite ancient, has suffered the torment of weather and time, over the years.

The Mama Bhanja temple is also of great artistic significance as it has beautiful carvings of foliage, lotuses, and so on, on its walls and ceilings. The lintel of the temple has a beautiful image of Lord Ganesha. The temple, like most others has its own share of myths and legends associated with it.

Other than worshipping Lord Shiva, the temple is the representation of the temple architecture of the Naga dynasty. One would not only feel spiritually amazing, but also be able to view the beautiful art and architecture of the period. One of the few of its kind, the temple should definitely not be missed by tourists visiting Barsur in Dantewada district of...

Mama-Bhanja temple of Barsur village in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh state, about 90 km from Jagdalpur. This temple is associated with an interesting story. A king wanted to establish a Shiva temple on one strange condition -- the temple was to be completed within one day only. This was practically impossible, so no temple builders dare to come forward. The king was very depressed. One day two men, maternal uncle (Mama) and nephew (Bhanja) in relation, came to the king and offered to construct the temple in one day. The king was astonished, but gave permission. And what a miracle, Mama-Bhanja pair could complete the temple in one day. The King was extremely pleased and in honour of the two great artisans he named the temple "Mama-Bhanja" temple. He did another job to honour the awesome duo. He placed their statues near the top of the temple. The temple : The temple is a Nagara type of temple with a raised platform and a curvilinear Shikhar or pinnacle. The walls and the Shikhar are covered with extensive stone carvings. Most notable is a series of KIRTIMUKHA sculptures on the outer walls. The sanctum now houses two idols - that of Lord Ganesha and Nrusingha Deva, but these look like a later addition.

It is a nice...

The Archaeological Treasures of Barsur: What is now a small sleepy village was once the center of power during the tenure of the Gangawanshi rulers in as early as 840 A.D, and was the capital of Nagvanshi kings.   Situated on the banks of Indravati river, this ancient town is loaded with temples that come with magnificent and alluring architecture It is believed that there used to be 147 temples and equal number of ponds during the glory days of Barsoor. Unfortunately most of them have been buried or left to decay gradually over the last dozen centuries. But still the ruins of the temples that have been restored are absolutely worth a trip to this much ignored architectural treasure of India. Highlights are the  Mama Bhanja temple that is very well maintained and has a thousand stories to tell through the carvings on it’s walls. The Chandraditya temple with its exquisite sculptures. And the characterful Battisa temple with gorgeous mandapas and stone blocks. Hope the Archaeological society of India turns its attention towards this region and unearths other marvellous structures that are still hidden under the ground! #Chattisgarh #LostTemples  #IncredibleIndia
