The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha is a spiritual, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to improving society through individual growth by fostering the Hindu ideals of faith, unity, and selfless service.

“In the joy of others lies our own.” – Pramukh Swami Maharaj “True spirituality speaks the language of love.” – Pramukh Swami Maharaj “Better the world around you by bettering yourself.” – Pramukh Swami Maharaj

SPIRITUAL LIVING

Bhagwan Swaminarayan established the Swaminarayan faith and renewed the ideals of Hinduism in 18th century India. He established a spiritual way of life and code of conduct to be followed. ‘Satsang’ is the word used by Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s followers to describe the process of associating with God and the guru to achieve spiritual enlightenment. Literally, ‘sat’ and ‘sang’ in Sanskrit mean ‘association with the truth.’ Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s followers are commonly referred to as ‘satsangis’ as they identify with Swaminarayan satsang.

Satsangis live their daily lives in accordance with a righteous code of conduct, or dharma, which is defined by the Swaminarayan scriptures as well as by the living guru. As explained by Pramukh Swami Maharaj (1921-2016), “Paraspar preeti prasaravey te dharma,” which means, “That [code of conduct] which increases love and peace is worthy of being called dharma.”

The central religious tenet for BAPS satsangis is bhakti, or devotion to God. Bhakti, when combined with dharma, gnan (spiritual knowledge), and vairagya (detachment), leads to one becoming an ideal devotee, or an ekantik bhakta. This is achieved in the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha by devoting oneself to God as per the example set by the guru. The guru is the ideal bhakta of God; hence, the guru guides spiritual aspirants on the path to spiritual bliss, a state that he enjoys continuously.

Culture and heritage

Culture and heritage are a distinct part of the identity of an individual and a community. The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha hosts a variety of initiatives to help Indians stay connected with their cultural roots. The Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Delhi and Gandhinagar stand as a testament to the 10,000 year old culture of the Indian subcontinent and will remain a tribute for future generations. Various exhibitions and special Mega Festivals bring India to the doorsteps of Indians living both geographically and ideologically outside of India. Mystic India, the first large format film ever produced about India, transported the mysticism of India to the hearts and homes of millions worldwide. BAPS mandirs preserve ancient Hindu traditions. They are a celebrated example of majestic Indian architecture and promote a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle prescribed by the ancient sages. Through BAPS’ many cultural initiatives, millions of people can experience the beauty of India and its traditions.

DEVELOPING INDIVIDUALS

Bhagwan Swaminarayan believed in responding to the social needs of the then current climate. Developing individuals and families was vital to maintaining the social structure of India in the 18th century. Thus, He concentrated on the spiritual and social development of each individual, while maintaining the primacy of the family as a basic social unit. Those development measures remain relevant today.

Life is a continuous source of change. People mature and develop through different stages in life. It is the direction of this constant change that determines the decline or prosperity of a community and a generation. Developing individuals is the foundation for strengthening our communities. The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha stays with people through life’s changes by helping them develop their academic and professional careers and their social and familial lives. BAPS fosters a community where children are nurtured through academic programs, character building initiatives, and wellness programs. Individuals are given a platform to practice and perfect their talents. With the skills developed through these initiatives, BAPS encourages people to contribute to...

Jay Shree Swaminarayan BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, a renowned spiritual and humanitarian organization, connects with individuals through its network of mandirs (temples) and discourse centers. Serving as permanent sanctuaries for people of all ages, beliefs, and backgrounds, these centers provide a source of peace and spiritual guidance. With over 1000 temples and approximately 3000 reformation centers worldwide, BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha has established a global presence.

Among these centers, the BAPS Swaminarayan temple in Gondal, Gujarat holds a special place. This temple, known as the Akshar Deri temple, draws thousands of devotees each year who seek solace and relief from their pain and sorrow. Through prayers and offerings, these devotees express their faith in the belief that the Lord will alleviate their burdens and provide spiritual comfort.

Situated in the town of Gondal, within the Rajkot district of Gujarat, the Akshar Deri temple is considered a holy place due to its association with one of Swaminarayan's earliest disciples, Aksharbrahma Gunatitanand Swami. Gunatitanand Swami, a devoted follower of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, played a significant role in the spiritual journey of many. In May 1934, Shastriji Maharaj, the third successor of Swaminarayan, constructed a magnificent three-story temple above the Akshar Deri in honor of Gunatitanand Swami. This temple stands as a testament to the devotion and reverence of its creators and serves as a prominent destination for devotees, particularly on the auspicious day of Sharad Purnima.

Gondal holds a special connection to Lord Swaminarayan and His paramhansas, who would frequently visit the town to bathe in the sacred waters of River Gondali. Gunatitanand Swami, serving as the family guru of Gondal's royal family, played a pivotal role in the spiritual upliftment of the region. During one of his discourses, while resting against a pillar, Gunatitanand Swami attained heavenly abode. In commemoration of his life and teachings, the king of Gondal constructed a beautiful shrine at the site where Gunatitanand Swami's ashes were placed in an urn. This shrine, known as Akshar Deri, soon gained prominence as a pilgrimage destination where devotees believed their prayers would be answered and their wishes fulfilled.

The history of the Akshar Deri temple is intertwined with an old school that administered the surrounding area for over six decades. Inspired by a divine dream in which Gunatitanand Swami appeared, a devoted disciple named Narayan Maharaj embarked on the mission of constructing a three-tier spiral temple. Haribhai Amin generously donated the land required for the temple, which was subsequently built atop the shrine of Gunatitanand Swami. The Akshar Mandir, within the temple, houses the idol of Akshar Purshottam, and Yogiji Maharaj, a revered spiritual leader, became the temple's first mahant.

The temple encompasses several important shrines, each holding its own significance. The first shrine features the revered images of Dham, Dhami, and Mukta. The second shrine depicts the Guru Parampara, representing the lineage of spiritual gurus. In the third shrine, the idols of Purushottam and Akshar take central prominence. The fourth shrine houses Sukh Shayya, while the fifth shrine showcases Ghanshyam Maharaj.

The Akshar Deri temple has witnessed numerous miraculous occurrences, reinforcing the devotees' faith and devotion. For instance, during the temple's construction,...

A Divine and Peaceful Experience at BAPS Swaminarayan Temple - Akshar Deri, Gondal

Visiting BAPS Swaminarayan Temple - Akshar Deri in Gondal is an incredibly spiritual and serene experience. This temple holds immense religious significance for devotees of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, as it is home to the sacred Akshar Deri, the final resting place of Gunatitanand Swami, the first successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.

As soon as you enter the temple premises, you are greeted by a divine atmosphere filled with positive vibrations, soothing bhajans, and the aroma of incense. The temple’s architecture is magnificent, with beautifully carved marble and intricate details that reflect traditional Swaminarayan craftsmanship. The surroundings are well-maintained, clean, and peaceful, making it a perfect place for meditation and prayer.

One of the most special aspects of this place is the Akshar Deri rituals, where devotees perform dandvat pranam (prostrations), pradakshina (circumambulation), and deep darshan to seek blessings. Many believe that offering prayers here fulfills wishes and brings spiritual progress.

The Spectacular Laser Show – A Must-Watch

One of the highlights of this temple is the breathtaking laser show, which beautifully narrates the life, teachings, and divine journey of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and Aksharbrahma Gunatitanand Swami. The combination of vibrant laser lights, water projections, and spiritual storytelling creates an immersive experience that is both informative and soul-stirring.

The visuals, music, and narration make the entire show mesmerizing, helping visitors connect deeply with the temple’s history and significance. It is a perfect blend of technology and spirituality, leaving devotees and visitors in awe. The laser show takes place at 7 PM every evening, and I highly recommend planning your visit around this time to witness this divine spectacle.

Super Special Prasad – A Feast for Devotees

One of the most remarkable aspects of this temple is the variety of delicious food (prasad) provided completely free of cost to every devotee. The temple serves a nutritious, satvik meal prepared with devotion, ensuring that all visitors receive divine hospitality.

The prasad consists of a wide variety of items, including freshly prepared vegetables, dal, chapati, rice, sweets, and special delicacies, all cooked in a hygienic and spiritual environment. The food is not just nourishing but also a symbol of selfless service and devotion.

The sevadars (volunteers) serve with immense humility and dedication, making every visitor feel welcomed and blessed. The experience of having this prasad is truly special and adds to the spiritual fulfillment of the visit.

Final Thoughts

The temple complex also features a serene garden, a holy riverfront, and a bookstore where visitors can learn more about the Swaminarayan philosophy. The volunteers and saints are very welcoming and guide visitors with warmth and devotion.

Whether you are a devotee or someone looking for peace and spiritual rejuvenation, this temple is a must-visit. The divine energy, blissful atmosphere, mesmerizing laser show, and the generous prasad (free meal service) leave a lasting impression on the heart and soul. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Gondal or...

A Divine and Peaceful Experience at BAPS Swaminarayan Temple - Akshar Deri, Gondal Visiting BAPS Swaminarayan Temple - Akshar Deri in Gondal is an incredibly spiritual and serene experience. The Spectacular Laser Show – A Must-Watch One of the highlights of this temple is the breathtaking laser show, which beautifully narrates the life, teachings, and divine journey of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and Aksharbrahma Gunatitanand Swami. Super Special Prasad – A Feast for Devotees One of the most remarkable aspects of this temple is the variety of delicious food (prasad) provided completely free of cost to every devotee. Final Thoughts The temple complex also features a serene garden, a holy riverfront, and a bookstore where visitors can learn more about the Swaminarayan philosophy. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Gondal or nearby Rajkot!
