Garudeshwar Dutt Mandir (vasudevanand saraswati) — Attraction in Gujarat

Earlier, this Garudesvar village was very small and it was of little importance {mahima}. But since Sri Svami Vasudevanandji Sarasvati came and stayed here, it has aquired a special fame. Nowadays Garuesvar has a lot of modern facilities and has grown into a medium sized town. There is the huge Datta temple, which was built by the svami. He had been initiated by Sri Narayan Svami at his native place Ujjain and subsequently taken up service. Later, he went on a tirtha yatra touring the whole country. In the year 1913 he honoured Garudesvar by his visit, when this place was almost uninhabited. Then, the svami installed himself under a tree. Devotees began to built a straw hut for him. Slowly his reputation spread in all directions. He was well-versed in Sanskrit and knew Astrology and Ayurveda. There are about 20-22 books written by him either in Sanskrit or Marathi. In samvat {Christian} 1970 he began to built the temple of god Dattatreya. At that time he founded a trust to which he handed over the temple. In the same year on the new moon day of the month of jyesth, he gave up his mortal body. A large samadhi was constructed here, on the bank of the Narmada. Garudeshwar Datta Mandir. In the early twentieth century, the was a famous sage with a long and complicated name of Paramahamsa Parivrajakacharya Sree Vasudevananda Saraswathy Swamy Maharaj. He was a devotee of Lord Dattatreya during his wanderings he preached the ways of the ancient Vedic path and lead the people gone astray from varnashrama dharma due to his teachings and sainthood he had a great following. In the last year of his life, he reached Garudeshawar where there was a small temple where Garuda is believed to have done penance. It was here that the saint took samadhi and left for his heavenly abode. As per the info board installed at the temple Vasudevananda Saraswathy Swamy Maharaj wanted the Dattatrey idol with him to be sent to Narsobavadi or Ganagapur. He gave this job to Shri Ganda Maharaj. Lord Dattatreya appeared in the dream of Shri Ganda Maharaj and told him that he wanted to stay at Garudeshwar, so Gonda Maharaj and followers of Vasudevananda Saraswathy Swamy Maharaj built a Datta Samsthan and temple. at this location. श्रीक्षेत्र गरुडेश्वर

या स्थळी पूर्वीच्या अति बलशाली असा गजासूर राक्षस रहात होता. त्याने हत्तीचे रूप घेऊन गरूडाशी भीषण युद्ध केले या युद्धात गरूडानी गजासूराचा जीव घेतला. त्याची हाडे पर्वतावर पडून राहिली. कालांतराने त्याची हाडे नर्मदेत वाहून आल्याने त्याचा देह पवित्र झाला. गजासूराने नर्मदा नदीत राहून १०० वर्षे तपश्चर्या केली. त्यामुळे भगवान शंकर त्यावर प्रसन्न झाले. भगवान शंकराने गजासूरास सांगितले, ‘मी तुझ्या भक्तिमुळे संतुष्ट झालो आहे, हवा तो वर माग’ तेव्हा गजासूराने असा वर मागितला कि जे कोणी या ठिकाणी स्नान संध्या, देवपूजा, तर्पण, तसेच दान करेल त्याचे पाप नष्ट होईल. अमावस्या, संक्रांति, विशेष पर्व, ग्रहण आणि अधिक महिन्यात, रवि-सोमवारी जे स्नान करतील त्यांना अन्य क्षेत्रीच्या लाखपट फळ मिळेल आणि केवळ स्नान करण्याने प्राणीमात्रांच्या पापाचे परिमार्जन होईल. हे स्थळ कुरूक्षेत्राप्रमाणे प्रसिद्ध होईल.  आपला श्रेष्ठ गण म्हणून मला स्थान द्या. तसेच माझ्या शरीराचे कातडे (चर्म) आपण धारण करा. गरूडाच्या हातून माझा मृत्यु झाला आणि मला हा अलभ्य लाभ प्राप्त झाला. म्हणून आपले नाव गरूडाबरोबर जोडून या ठिकाणी वास करून सद्भक्तांची मनोकामना पूर्ण करावी.

गजासूराची प्रार्थना ऐकून भगवान शंकर म्हणाले, ‘तुझे नाव त्रिभुवनात प्रसिद्ध होण्यासाठी मी तुझ्या शरीराचे कातडे घालीन, तसेच या स्थानी राहून भक्तांची मनोकामना पूर्ण करीन. तू त्या स्थळी गरूड नावाच्या लिंगाची स्थापना कर. जे ‘गरूडेश्वर महादेव’ या नावाने ऒळखले जाईल. तसेच तुझ्या गजदेहाची कवटी (खोपडी) नर्मदेत पाण्यात पडली, त्यामुळे तुझा देह दिव्य होऊन हा लाभ मिळाला. म्हणून ह्या नर्मदा किनारी लिंगाची स्थापना कर. जे ‘करोटेश्वर महादेव’ या नावाने प्रसिद्ध होईल. भगवान शंकराच्या आज्ञे प्रमाण गजासूराने एक लिंग पर्वतावर आणि दुसरे लिंग नर्मदाकिनारी स्थापन केले.

गरुडेश्वर महादेव मंदिर भगवान शंकरांनी पुन्हा म्हटले, ‘जे कोणी या दोन्ही लिंगाचे पूजन दक्षिण दिशेकडे तोंड करून भावनेने करतील, त्यास लगेच फळ देईन. शुक्लपक्ष आणि कृष्णपक्षाची अष्टमी आणि चतुर्दशीच्या दिवशी जे कोणी भक्तिभावाने पूजन करून जागरण करतील, त्याच्या एकवीस पिढयांचा उद्धार करीन येथे नाभी पर्यंत नर्मदेच्या पाण्यात उभे राहून, जे पितृतर्पण करतील, त्यांच्या पूर्वजांना कैलासात घेऊन जाईन. येथे एका ब्राम्हणास भोजन घातले असता एक लाख ब्राम्हण भोजन घातल्याचे पुण्य देईन ज्यांच्या अस्थि (हाडे) नर्मदेत पडतील आणि त्या नर्मदेत राहीपर्यंत मी त्यास कैलासास नेऊन सुखी करीन. शेवटी श्रीमंताच्या घरी त्याला जन्म देऊन राजवैभवाचा अनुभव करवीन जर तो संपूर्णपणे निष्काम असेल तर विदेह कैवल्य (मुक्ति) प्राप्त करवीन. गजासूरा ! या विषयी कोणतीही शंका घेऊ नकोस. मी तुला माझ्या गणांमध्ये स्थान देईन. हे तीर्थ महात्म्य जे कोणी भक्तीभावनेने श्रवण करतील, त्याची सर्व पापातून मुक्ती करीन. असे सांगून भगवान श्री शंकर गुप्त झाले आणि विमानाने गजासूरास कैलासावर घेऊन गेले त्या दिवसापासून नर्मदेच्या उत्तर किनारी गरूडेश्वर क्षेत्राचे निर्माण झाले. करोटेश्वर मंदिराच्या पूर्वेस नारदेश्वर महादेवाचे मंदिर आहे. या ठिकाणी नारदांनी तपश्चर्या करून हरिहराला प्रसन्न केले होते ह्या स्थळी नारदजींनी लिंग स्थापित केले होते, जे ‘नारदेश्वर महादेव’ म्हणून प्रसिद्ध आहे. हरिहरांनी, नारदांना वर दिला होता कि ‘नारदेश्वरांची पूजा करणाऱ्यास शिवपद प्राप्त होईल’ तसेच या स्थळी शास्त्राभ्यास किंवा योगाभ्यास लगेच सिद्ध होईल.
