Gir Interpretation Zone

Also known as Devalia Safari Park, the Gir Interpretation Zone is a fenced area of around 4 square kilometers located within Gir National Park, Gujarat, India. It was established in 1995 to reduce tourist pressure on the main sanctuary area and to provide visitors with an opportunity to see Asiatic lions and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

The Gir Interpretation Zone represents a microcosm of Gir National Park, with all major habitat types and wildlife present. The area has a good population of prey animals, such as spotted deer, blue bulls, wild boars, blackbucks, sambar, and chinkaras, which attracts lions and other predators.

Visitors to the Gir Interpretation Zone can take a safari in open-air jeeps to see the wildlife. The park also has an interpretation center with exhibits on the flora and fauna of Gir National Park, as well as the history and culture of the region.

Wildlife in the Gir Interpretation Zone

In addition to Asiatic lions, the Gir Interpretation Zone is home to a variety of other wildlife, including:

Leopards Sloth bears Hyenas Jackals Crocodiles Pythons Mugger Monitor lizards Over 300 species of birds

Things to do in the Gir Interpretation Zone

The safaris are conducted by experienced forest guides who know the park well and can help visitors spot the different animals. Visitors can learn about the importance of Gir National Park and its wildlife, and how they can help to protect it. Nature walks: Visitors can also take nature walks through the Gir Interpretation Zone with experienced forest guides. This is a great way to learn more about the plants and animals of the park and to see the wildlife up close.

Tips for visiting the Gir Interpretation Zone

The best time to visit the Gir Interpretation Zone is during the winter months (October to March), when the weather is mild and the animals are more active. It is important to book your safari in advance, especially if you are visiting during peak season. Be sure to carry your identity card and safari booking ticket with you when you visit. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Carry a water bottle and snacks with you. Respect the wildlife and their habitat. Keep a safe distance from the animals and observe silence.

The Gir Interpretation Zone is a great place to learn about and see the wildlife of Gir National Park. It is a perfect destination for wildlife enthusiasts...

This is kind of compromised safari with lesser excitement under the controlled environment. This is basically fenced-off compound for the various wildlife in the Gir forest, which is also called as Interpretation Zone. Chances of spotting the lions, leopards and deers are assured as they know where to find them.

This is better than fake zoo setting, where probably wildlife don’t know that they live in an artificially controlled setting. We get to see the wildlife from the bus for about 30 minutes. This is not a bad option for those who have limited time and do not have bookings available for longer original Gir safari.

We had 29 family members in our group so there was no one else in our safari bus, so it felt like a chartered bus. Our timing was 4.00 pm so we saw only sleeping lions and leopards. The better time to see these animals is in the morning or evening slots.

Real thrill seekers shouldn’t go for this option. The entry into the gate gives you the feeling of going into Jurassic Park. Since we were 29 people in our group, we preferred bus but in the hindsight it feels that gypsy option is much better than bus.

The big wall type enclosure for the leopards doesn’t seem appropriate and feels more like a zoo, where they do not have enough space for roaming and hunting. But probably leopards are more notorious and dangerous than lions for humans also.

There was no guide with us in the bus. I am not sure if the bus driver was supposed to be our guide. The driver didn’t speak a single word or explained anything and just stopped the bus at various points so that we can spot the animals.

I am not sure whether we got our value for the money in this watered down version of the safari, which is regarded as “Gir in a nutshell”. We definitely saw few lazy lions who ignored our presence along with other tourists from...
