10 interesting facts about the Narendra Modi Stadium

World’s Largest Cricket Stadium

Overtaking Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia, the Narendra Modi Stadium is now the world’s largest cricket stadium. While the MCG has a capacity of 1,00,024 seats, the Narendra Modi Stadium surpasses it with a 1,10,000 seating capacity.

A rich history

While the makeover is new and exciting, the Motera Stadium, earlier known as the Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium in Gujarat has a rich history. In 1986-87, Sunil Gavaskar scored his 10,000th run in Test cricket here, Kapil Dev took his 432nd Test wicket in 1994, AB de Villiers smashed a Test double-ton in 2008, India defeated Australia in the quarterfinal of the 2011 ODI World Cup, Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to score 30,000 international runs among others.

Rs 800 crore makeover

The government roped in the same team that worked on the construction of the Statue of Unity, for the grand makeover of the Narendra Modi Stadium. This new look was afforded at a price of Rs 800 crore, per Times Now.

Massive parking space

As the stadium is anticipating people coming in large numbers, it has a huge parking space that can accommodate 3,000 cars and 10,000 two-wheelers.

76 corporate boxes

If there are any big cricket games at the Narendra Modi Stadium i.e. a World Cup match or a final, do not be surprised to see the politicians and actors in attendance. The stadium has 76 corporate boxes, all air-conditioned, and can seat 25 people in each one.

Nets, nets and more nets

At the Narendra Modi Stadium, the outfielders will not have to worry about the ball skidding off the practice pitches. The stadium packs two separate practice grounds with 9 pitches and ample nets for players to practice in tandem.

Multi-purpose stadium

Apart from being the world’s largest cricket stadium, it also has a full-fledged cricket academy, numerous indoor pitches and a number of facilities for other sports like football, hockey, basketball etc.

Spreads across 63 acres of land!

Including the massive parking spaces, the cricketing ground, the stands and practice grounds, the area of the stadium spreads across a vast 63 acres.

LED lights on the field

The Narendra Modi Stadium is also the first stadium in India where the ground has been fitted with LED lights.

Food court at every stand and a built-in clubhouse

A facility that is rare in stadiums in India, Narendra Modi Stadium has a food court at almost every stand. And, it also features a clubhouse with A-grade gyming facilities for players...

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, stands as the world's largest cricket stadium, boasting a seating capacity of 132,000 spectators. Inaugurated in 2020 after extensive renovations, it has garnered attention for its state-of-the-art facilities and design.

Design and Facilities

Spanning 63 acres, the stadium features:

76 corporate boxes, each accommodating 25 guests. A 55-room clubhouse equipped with an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Four dressing rooms to facilitate multiple teams. A unique LED lighting system mounted on the roof's inner edge, eliminating the need for traditional floodlights and reducing on-field shadows. An indoor cricket academy, practice pitches, and dormitories for athletes. Additional amenities include badminton and tennis courts, a squash area, table tennis facilities, and a 3D projector theatre.

The stadium's architecture incorporates Y-shaped columns, providing spectators with unobstructed views by eliminating the need for pillars. The roof, designed by Walter P. Moore, is lightweight and separate from the seating bowls, enhancing earthquake resistance.

Recent Events and Recognition

In March 2023, the stadium hosted the fourth Test match between India and Australia, attended by both nations' prime ministers, Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese. The venue has also entered the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the largest number of spectators during the IPL 2022 final, with an attendance of 101,566.

Critiques and Areas for Improvement

Despite its grandeur, the stadium has faced criticism regarding spectator comfort. In October 2023, during the ICC World Cup matches, attendees highlighted issues with seating conditions, sharing images of worn-out and damaged seats. Such feedback suggests that while the stadium excels in scale and facilities, maintenance of spectator areas requires attention to enhance the overall experience.

Conclusion

The Narendra Modi Stadium is a testament to modern engineering and India's passion for cricket. Its vast capacity and comprehensive facilities make it a premier venue for international cricket. Addressing maintenance concerns, particularly regarding spectator seating, will be crucial in ensuring it remains a top choice for both players and...

I recently visited the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to watch the IPL match between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), and it was truly an unforgettable experience!

Atmosphere & Crowd: The energy in the stadium was absolutely electric! GT fans showed up in huge numbers and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement right from the moment I entered. The chants, music, and crowd coordination made the whole match feel larger than life.

Infrastructure & Seating: This stadium is the world’s largest cricket stadium, and you can feel its grandeur the moment you step inside. The seating is spacious, well-structured, and offers a great view of the pitch from almost every angle. I was impressed with how clean and organized everything was despite the massive crowd.

Entry & Security: Security checks were thorough yet efficient. Entry was managed well with proper signboards and crowd control. It’s advisable to reach a bit early, especially for high-voltage matches likeInternational Matches, to avoid long queues.

Facilities: Washrooms were surprisingly clean and maintained. There were multiple food counters and beverage stalls throughout the stadium. While prices were a bit on the higher side (as expected in such venues), the quantity was less, the quality was decent and service was quick considering the rush.

Accessibility & Parking: The stadium is well connected and easy to reach. Parking is available but it’s better to use public transport or cabs on match days to avoid traffic hassles. The staff outside were quite helpful in guiding people to their designated gates.

Match Experience: Watching GT vs RR live, with thousands of fans cheering, was something else! The light shows, fireworks, music, and overall entertainment made it more than just a match—it felt like a festival. The stadium screens and sound system added to the thrill.

Final Thoughts: If you’re a cricket lover, Narendra Modi Stadium is a must-visit. It’s not just about the game; it’s the whole vibe that makes it worth every minute. Hats off to the management for maintaining such a...
