Pradhyuman Zoological Park, also known simply as Rajkot Zoo or Pradyuman Park, is a premier zoological destination located on the outskirts of Rajkot city in Gujarat. Spanning over approximately 55 hectares, the park is set amidst undulating terrain enriched by rocky outcrops and valleys, surrounded by two large lakes—Lalpari Lake and Randarda Lake. Its strategic location offers visitors a picturesque environment with a harmonious blend of natural beauty and well-maintained animal habitats.
The origins of Pradhyuman Zoological Park trace back to the early 1990s, when the initial concept of a mini zoo beside the Aji Dam was realized in 1992. The mini zoo housed animals such as Asiatic lions, tigers, leopards, Himalayan black bears, blackbucks, and crocodiles but eventually fell short of the standards set by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) due to its outdated enclosures and limited facilities. Responding to the need for a more modern and spacious facility for wildlife conservation and public education, the Municipal Corporation of Rajkot decided, in 1999, to establish a larger, state-of-the-art zoological park. After careful site selection and design, the new Rajkot Zoological Park was developed at the Pradyuman Park location, approximately two kilometers from the mini zoo, and inaugurated on 14th August 2010 by then Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Physically, the park showcases a rocky landscape with basaltic and ignite rock formations interspersed with shallow valleys filled with fertile black cotton soil, making it an ideal environment where animals can be housed in habitats mimicking their natural surroundings. To enhance the park’s ecosystem, a massive plantation drive was undertaken, resulting in the cultivation of over 45,000 trees, shrubs, herbs, creepers, and climbers, predominantly consisting of local species, which provides shelter and food for the animals and a lush green environment for visitors.
The zoological park is home to a diverse collection of animal species, including free-ranging and caged mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Visitors can see majestic big cats like lions, tigers, leopards, and panthers alongside elephants, antelopes, deer, foxes, hyenas, and various other mammals. The avifauna is enriched with over 100 species of birds including peafowls, hawks, vultures, and various parrots, while the reptile section contains species such as Indian rock pythons, king cobras, rattlesnakes, and alligators. One of the major attractions is the presence of rare and exotic species, including the mesmerizing white tiger.
The park is thoughtfully designed for both conservation and education. It features large enclosures that aim to replicate the natural habitats of the animals, providing them with comfortable living spaces and visitors with an immersive wildlife experience. Educational displays and galleries offer information about the animals, their habitats, behavior, and conservation status to engage and inform visitors, especially children. There are also several recreational spaces such as well-maintained lawns, walking paths, and play areas, making it an ideal spot for family outings.
Community outreach and wildlife education are key priorities for the park’s management. Regular programs raise awareness about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species, fostering a connection between visitors and nature. The staff is knowledgeable and available to guide visitors, enhancing the overall experience.
