Rukmani Devi Temple (also known as Rukshamani temple) is located at around 2 to 3km from Dwarka, enroute Bet Dwarka. It is a very old and beautiful temple. Goddess Rukmini Devi is Lord Krishna's prime wife. It is a small and clean temple with ample parking space. The temple is not much crowded. The devotees are allowed to enter the main temple in groups. The temple priest then clearly explains the history behind the temple and the reason why Rukmani devi temple is placed away from Dwarkadhish temple. According to the legend once Lord Krishna and his wife Rukmani Devi visited Rishi Durvaasaa. After the pooja, both of them requested rishi Durvaasaa to visit Dwarka along with them. Though Rishi Durvasa accepted their invitation, he made one condition to Lord Krishna & Rukmani Devi. Rishi Durvasa wanted both of them (in lieu of the horses) to pull the rath carrying him for the journey to Dwarka. Accordingly, Lord Krishna and Rukmini devi were pulling the Rath carrying Durvaasaa to Dwarka. Enroute, Rukmini Devi felt thirsty and asked Lord Krishna for water to drink. Lord Krishna drew Ganges by prodding the ground with his toe. Rukmini Devi drank the water and quenched her thirst. With this Rishi Durvaasaa felt insulted as Rukmini devi did not find it courteous to ask the Rishi whether he would like to drink the water first. Hence Rishi Durvaasaa cursed her that from that moment she would live separately from Lord Krishna for twelve years and that there would be no sweet drinking water ever in the vicinity. That’s why Rukmani Devi is separated from Dwarkadhish here. Accordingly, there is a system (called Jal-Dhan) in the temple wherein devotees can donate amounts to the temple for arranging sweet drinking water for the people around. This is as a token of your participation in relieving Rukmani Devi from the curse of Rishi Durvaasaa. Sweet drinking water is distributed here as temple prasad.
