Head northeast from Surat’s city to the border of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, where the Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over 608sq km. Established in 1982, the sanctuary is made up of a mixed forest of teak, riverine forest and deciduous dry jungles that are inhabited by leopards, sloth bears, pangolins, barking deer and a number of birds and reptiles. It was originally established for the protection of sloth bears. The Zarwani waterfall inside the jungle drops from a craggy rock face into a deep gorge.

Brief History: The sanctuary was first declared a protected area in 1982. An area of 150.87 sq. km was called the ‘Dumkhal Sanctuary’, specifically created for the protection of sloth bears. In the years 1987 and 1989, more land was attributed to conservation and the area of the sanctuary enlarged to 607.70 sq km. It was then renamed ‘Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary’.

How to get there By Road NH8 passes through Vadodara, making it well connected by road as well. The statue lies about 90km from the city off a small town called Kevadia (3.5 km from the actual site).

A serene place having several eco-tourism sites is developed by Gujarat tourism. We visited the Sagai eco-tourism site along with Ninai waterfalls. Both locations are identified in Google maps and easily accessible by four wheelers. The small stretch of may be seven kms to Ninai waterfalls is rough road but we can go up to water fall site by tempo traveller. There are 150 steps to fall from the entry. At Ninai fall water was available and falling in beautiful way. One can inquire about the Sagai eco tourism site on Gujarat tourism toll free no. and get details of samiti who can arrange food on request. We have been charged 150 Rs. per dish comprising of green vegetables, chole chana, roti, makai rotla, rice, dal, kachumber, papad, and Chhash prepared and served in healthy way. The taste was good and everybody in our group was happy with the lunch. The site is having facilities of toilet /bathroom and cottages and dormitory for fifteen people. We had enjoyed till evening and started return journey by 5:30 pm. Peaceful and lush green place!

This Shoolpaneshwar Mahadev temple is located at a distance of 8 Kms from the Sardar Sarovar Dam and about 1.5 Kms from the Gora Colony. It is just about 300 meters from the bridge above the Narmada River from where one crosses over for going to the Sardar Sarovar Dam. It is told that the original ancient Shoolpaneshwar Mahadev Temple which was located on the Narmada River, got completely submerged in the development and dam project being carried out. Hence the Shivlinga from the original temple has been reestablished at this new temple. The temple area is clean and well maintained. The surroundings are pleasant. Devotees throng to the temple for darshan on special days of Lord Shiva and festivals. It is at a distance of about 87 kms from the Vadodara Airport.
