Good place to visit this beautiful tomb was built over the mortal remains of Khwaja Khizr, This is a very special tomb as it is made of 'kankar' blocks used along with red standstone which is very rare. The tomb has square protections at its corners, and is approachable through wide stairs which are leading to its gateway. The gateway consists of two openings at the central passage,It is decorated with designs in blue, yellow, green and dull red colours. A tomb was built during the period 1522-1524 A.D to preserve his mortal remains after his death. The inscription on the tomb indicates that he was the son of Darya Khan Sarwani. The tomb of Khwaja Khizr is one of the few monuments built with kankar blocks and red sandstone. It is erected over an elevated platform and has been strengthened with square extensions over the corners. The tomb can be reached by a flight of steps that end up to the gateway which comprises two arched openings at the end of the central passage. Its exterior is embellished with lotus medallions, floral designs and arched recesses. The ceiling of the mosque is decorated with floral designs bearing a variety of colours including yellow, green and red which together create an enchanting complex of hues. The cenotaph or the burial chamber of the tomb is ringed by a semi-circular dome built upon low drums and topped by a canopy standing on an inverted lotus flower. The tomb is ringed by four acres of lush green gardens. It has been declared as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).The main structure stands amid a decently maintained large green park and has recently been restored by the government agencies. One can see children from the local village nearby playing cricket and enjoying in the lawn around the main structure. The tomb stands on a mound in the centre of the park and one needs to climb up a few big steps/stairs made of stone to reach the main complex.
The architecture is crisp, beautiful and picturesque, has artfully crafted doors and even the original calligraphy is quite clearly readable. At several places we see a good mix of Indo-Islamic architecture..esp the doorways which look like exquisitely carved temple-doorways.
The tomb houses inside the graves of Khwaja Khizr and there also are two small graves which are believed to be the graves of two cats who were close to the saint. We could see offerings, sweets and incense sticks lying inside the main shrine…these were perhaps ‘offered’ here by the local devotees who come here to pray. It's a beautiful place with natural scenary all around. A nice architectural specimen of Mughal Art. It's close to Sonipat Bus Depot and Sonipat Railway station. Have some shops nearby but not In the premises. The premises consists of a large park and the actual structure is in between the park. You can go with your kids and food for a Picnic kind of thing. Trees are enough to provide shade.
One thing is that it lacks care. Sanitation wise it's okay but the govt seems to be careless about it. It can be developed into a tourist place by giving just a little bit of attention and can generate great amount of revenue.
Still I won't suggest going specially to visit the place. Only if you're not keenly interested in the Mughal Art. NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE. Parking is also not available. But you can use the open spaces around it to park your car or bike but strictly on...
