Most famous battlefield and historical landmark of great India. Panipat was the scene of three pivotal battles in Indian history. The First Battle of Panipat was fought on 21 April 1526 between Ibrahim Lodhi, Sultan of Delhi, and the Timurid warlord Zaheeruddin Babur. Babur’s force defeated Ibrahim’s much larger force of over one lakh (one hundred thousand) soldiers. This First battle of Panipat thus ended the ‘Lodi Rule’ established by Bahlul Lodhi in India. The Second Battle of Panipat was fought on 5 November 1556 between the forces of Akbar and Samrat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya, a King of North India, who belonged to Rewari in Haryana and had captured the large states of Agra and Delhi defeating Akbar’s forces. This king, also known as Vikramaditya had won 22 battles against the Afghan rebels from 1553–1556 from Punjab to Bengal, and had his coronation at Purana Quila in Delhi on 7 October 1556 and had established ‘Hindu Raj’ in North India, before the 2nd battle of Panipat.Hem Chandra had a large army, and initially his forces were winning, but suddenly Hemu was struck by an arrow in the eye and he lost his senses. On not seeing him in his howdah on the back of an elephant, his army fled. He was later captured and beheaded by the Mughals. His head was sent to Kabul to be hanged outside Delhi Darwaza and torso was hanged outside Purana Quila in Delhi. This Second battle of Panipat thus ended the ‘Hindu Raj’ established by Hemu in north India, albeit for a short period.

The Third Battle of Panipat was fought in 1761 between the Afghan invader Ahmad Shah Abdali and the Peshwas of Maharashtra under Sadashivrao Bhau Peshwa of Pune. Ahmad Shah won but with a very heavy casualty rate on both sides. It resulted in the worst defeat of Peshwas of Maharashtra in their history. The war led to a power vacuum which later led to the British...

Panipat war shipTHE KALA AMB PARK

A well-known place where the Third Battle of Panipat had been fought, Kala Amb is situated at 8 kms. away from Panipat city. There is an interesting story behind the name Kala Amb. The Marathas came to North India with a belief of changing Indian polity forever. Like Ibrahim Lodhi, the Marathas were guilty of antagonizing all potential friends and allies as well. There was a clash between Maratha forces and the Afghan army. The Maratha force was surrounded by Afghan adversaries, more over, their lines of supply and reinforcement were cut off. The total number of casualties of Marathas were as high as 75,000, including senior commanders and Peshwa’s son. The battle field was full of dead bodies. Today, this site is marked by the Kala Amb Park on the outskirts of Panipat. Incredibly, people come here for a stroll in the peaceful surroundings.

In one corner of the park is a red obelisk. This marks the spot where the Maratha commander Sadashiv Rao Bhau fell in the battle. Legend and local tradition recount that a black mango tree stood at this spot and it was under this tree that Bhau fought his last action. The black mango tree exists no longer, but it has passed on its name to the park, hence the...

Kala Amb is situated at 8 kms away from Panipat city, known for it's three wars, pickles and handloom industry.. Kala Amb is beautiful and historical place.. A red obelisk marks the spot where the Maratha commander Sadashiv Rao Bhau fell in the third battle of Panipat between Marathas and the Afghans led by Ahmad Shah Durrani.. According to the local traditions a black mango tree stood at this spot and it was under this tree that Bhau fought his last action.. The old tree died and a new mango tree has been planted in its place near the Obelisk..

Apart from the tree, being the attraction of the place, there are many other places of interest near this site like cosmopolitan malls offering shopping and entertainment opportunities along with a handloom and textile market.. Decently maintained place Can be made more attractive for toirists by adding some more structures like museums statues etc.. A good war memorial to visit.. Free entry.. Good for a walk.

Good place if you want to take your family foe picnic.. Do carry your food and enough water bottles because you cannot rely on a government owned canteen.. Everyone wants to come here again after once.. Overall you will enjoy this place a lot.. It's so beautiful, so pure...

Panipat War Memorial is a must-visit for history lovers and patriots alike. The memorial beautifully honors the warriors of the three historic battles of Panipat. Life-sized statues, informative plaques, and the museum bring history to life. The sound and light show adds a powerful and emotional touch to the visit. Well-maintained gardens make it a peaceful place to walk and reflect. The layout is visitor-friendly and guides are available for deeper insight. It’s both educational and inspiring, especially for students and families. Clean surroundings and proper signage enhance the experience. Plenty of parking and basic facilities are available. A proud reminder of India’s rich and brave heritage.

The Battle of Panipat is something that every Indian student learners about in their school history. This place commemorates the place where the three battles were fought. The first one in 1526 between Ibrahim Lodi and Babur which was lost by Lodi, the second in 1556 between Hemu and Akbar which was win by Akbar and the 3rd in 1761 between the Marathas and Ahmad Shah Durrani, won by the latter. There are three plaques depicting the three battles. Doesn't seem to be a big tourist attraction despite it being maintained well. There is relatively big garden in the place. Today one finds lush green farms in what would have been a battlefield a few centuries ago. Do visit just to relive in the history.
