Kunzum Pass was one of the most memorable highlights of my Spiti trip. I visited in August while traveling from Kaza to Chandratal, and the experience was absolutely magical. At an altitude of over 4,500 meters, the pass feels like a gateway to a completely different world. The drive itself is adventurous, with winding roads and dramatic landscapes, but the moment you reach the top, you are welcomed by a sense of calm and serenity that words can hardly capture.
The atmosphere at Kunzum Pass was incredibly peaceful. Despite being at such a high altitude, I felt a strange sense of tranquility surrounded by towering mountains and vast open skies. The air was crisp and refreshing, and the stillness of the place made it feel like time had slowed down. The Buddhist chortens and prayer flags fluttering in the wind added a spiritual charm, as if blessing every traveler who crosses the pass.
From Kunzum, the views of snow-clad peaks and rugged valleys were simply stunning. Standing there, with nature in its raw and untouched form, was an experience I will never forget. No help available from Army or Govt of Himachal if needed or if you are stuck. BRO is maintaining it but with limited capacity. Road blockages are common here due to Sliding and glazier falls. There is no proper road available, you need to be well prepared before you cross losar. No mobile network will be available in the pass. Please have enough drinking water and food to survive if you are stuck in the pass for long hours/ days. Please inform your family at home before crossing losar, as you will not be able to communicate any info while you enter the pass. Keep a Jio sim card, as per my experience, at some places after you cross batal Jio will receive low signal , while all other service providers had ZERO signal. All the best.
