Shaktipeeth Shri Bajreshwari Devi Temple, Kangra — Attraction in Himachal Pradesh

The temple of Bajreshwari Devi or Brijeshwari Devi popularly known as Kangra Devi is an ancient temple wrapped in various mythological stories. Apart from the religious significance and spiritual values, one can be fascinated by just seeing the entirely white temple’s unique architecture. As per mythology this temple is one among 51 shakti peeths of Maa Aaadi shakti. We all know the Yagya episode of Daksha Prajapati, where Mata Sati jumped in to holy flames of Yagya to sacrifice herself in honor of her husband Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva can’t control himself, He took her body on his shoulder and start Tandav . In order to stop him from destroying the world Lord Vishnu divided the body of Sati into 51 parts with his Chakra. These 51 parts fell on earth. Each part of Sati converted in shakti sthal and thus 51 Shakti peeths created. It is believed that left breast of Sati fell at Bajreshwari Devi. It is also believed that the original temple of Maa Kangra devi was built in Mahabharta era.. Goddess Aadi Shakti came in dreams of Pandavs and told them that She is residing here as Bajreshwari Devi and they should make a temple to get themselves secured with the blessing of Devi. Then Pandavs make a magnificent temple here. It was one of richest temple in India. Mohd Gaznavi, a Muslim invader ransacked this temple many times and looted gold ornaments and pure silver Ghantas from here. This temple was also destroyed in a major earth quack in 1905 and was subsequently rebuilt by Government. The present temple as we see was built in 1920 in Shikhara style of architect and offers a magnificent example of stone carving. On my recent visit with my family, I got the opportunity to enter the inner sanctum for a while to pay my regards to Maa Kangra Devi. Here Maa bajreshwari Devi is worshipped in Pindi form, which is always beautifully decorated with flowers and ornaments. After performing our Puja, we visited the temple of Bhairava. Here Bhairava is the consort of Sati. You will also find a small temple of Dhyanu Bhagat, a devotee of the Devi. These both small temples are situated in the outside of mail temple Because of small size they bear the impact of earth quack in 1905. Another interesting legend says that while killing demon Mahishasura Devi had got some injuries too. To heel those injuries Goddess had applied butter on her body.
