Hyderabad is lucky to have such forest patches but unfortunately the administration has failed to protect this territory that has fallen prey to massive encroachment. Now what's left if this beautiful place is just about a few acres of land with some deer.

This place has two areas, one a nature park and other the protected area where the deer are enclosed. You need to purchase a bus safari ride ticket to get a 10-15minute ride in a rickety bus inside the park. There is of course a long queue you will have to stand in before you get your chance to board, as the place is quite popular with visitors and there is only one 20 seater bus.

What's guaranteed is sighting the deer, which are now quite used to the bus strolling into their area. You can sight a few peacocks and some monkeys too. The deer are provided plenty of water and dried grass placed on huge tarpaulin sheets and they get some shelter from the sun inside of a place that's covered in a high thatched fence.

What's interesting is there is a part of the patch where you can observe trees with twisted trunks akin to russia's dancing forest.

The park area is well facilitated with toilets, drinking water, a mini museum and also a small dusty library that always remains locked. There are huge lawns, a marked area called the butterfly park and a pagoda that was probably never cleaned since inception. There is a small snacks stall too for refreshments.

Would like to specially mention that a section of the park is turned into a resort of sorts with living accommodation. This is a part which is let out for functions, parties and celebrations. I guess you need to have some contacts in the right government departments to book this. Unfortunately, the people booking this tend to play loud music, do open cooking and strew tons of garbage, especially plastic and thermocol plates, plastic cups and newspapers. It's a complete mess and disturbs the animals and damages the habitat. This needs to stopped. Unfortunately local bucolic culture seems to take precedence over nature conservation.

Overall, this is kind of a place we keep going back to once in a few years just to get a glimpse of nature to soothe our eyes. It's quite kid friendly and children...

Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park is situated in Vanasthalipuram on NH9 towards Vijayawada. Named after the holy Jain saint 'Lord Mahavira', it was established in 1975 on 2500th birth anniversary of the saint. This sanctuary was once the exciting 'Shikargarh' or hunting ground of one of the Nizam rulers. It has now been converted into a protected national park. The park is in full bloom during monsoons when beautiful flowers of different colors blossom all around. This Park is home to the endangered Black Buck deer. An estimated 400 deer roam around the National Park fearlessly. The animals in the park are of a wide variety. Black bucks, porcupines, water monitors, short toed eagles, Indian herons, egrets, kingfishers, cormorants and myriad species of birds. The forest department also organizes a mini van safari into the forest (duration is 15 minutes) which offers excellent opportunity to watch wildlife from close proximity. There are plenty of deers on the safari track found in groups. The van usually stops for few minutes inside the forest to allow all visitors get a glimpse of the wild animals. There are several peacocks freely roaming in the park. The park premises also has a beautiful butterfly park which attracts varieties of butterfly species. The butterfly park is situated towards northern end of the complex. Apart from this, the park premises also has a wildlife museum with life size images of several animals and birds places amidst colorful setting.

I visited this park with a friend, and overall, it was a mixed experience. The ticket prices were Rs. 40 for garden entry and Rs. 70 to see the deer. However, since there were only two of us around 3:30 to 4:00 PM, we weren’t allowed to take the van ride to the deer enclosure, likely because they wait for a full van. This was disappointing, especially for visitors who travel from far or are from outside Nagrabah. Still, by God’s grace, we did get to see a few deer from a distance. The garden itself is quite peaceful and well-maintained. It’s clean, green, and offers a good place to relax. However, the butterfly park was underwhelming—we didn’t see a single butterfly. I also felt that the park could benefit from having more professional staff, including security and internal services. That said, my visit was on a weekday, so it's possible that there were fewer staff on duty compared to weekends. The park is large—possibly spread across hundreds of acres—and has a lot of potential. It’s a beautiful place within the city limits, and with more development and better management, it could become a major attraction. After visiting the park, we also went to Ramojii Theme City and Sanghi Temple, which are nearby and worth checking out. Rating: 3 out of 5 — Average experience, but the place is beautiful and full of potential. Message to the authorities: This park has great natural value and deserves more attention and development from the government.
