Banihal Pass — Attraction in Jammu and Kashmir

Banihal Pass (Devanagari: बनिहाल दर्रा Urdu: بانہال درا)is a mountain pass across the Pir Panjal Range at 2,832 m (9,291 ft) maximum elevation. This mountain range connects the Kashmir Valley in the Indian state Jammu and Kashmir to the outer Himalaya and plains to the south. In the Kashmiri language, "Banihāl" means blizzard.[1]

The road from Jammu to Srinagar transversed Banihal Pass until 1956 when Jawahar Tunnelwas constructed under the pass. The road now passes through the tunnel and the Banihal Pass is no longer used for road transport.

Particularly for bikers in dilemma whether to choose this or Himachal route to reach leh ;this route offers more scenery, challenging roads that are at lower altitude (thereby helping acclimatization) and has habitation at every 50 kms unlike the one that passes through sachru. Don't go by Media hype, check with tourism or local police if you want to guage the situation. Laden with facilities like hotel and resturant at number of points. Don't be afraid to ask local people for help and directions....

Very beautiful place. Jawahar Tunnel about 3 Kms distance located here. Titanic view point located just after crossing Jawahar Tunnel. Its so beautiful during snow fall. Due to extreme cold it is too difficult to manage here. The Railway tunnel is also located here. Very beautiful climate during summer as well.
