From Bangalore to Shimoga – In search of the Belligundi waterfalls in Sharavathi Valley

The first time I came to Bengaluru in 2010, everyone told me that this tech city is the base to explore the green Karnataka state.

Back then my knowledge about Karnataka was limited to the first page of Google that showed a standard list of destinations in the state: Coorg, Hampi, Chikamagalur, Gokarna, Ooty, Mysore, etc. My batchmates from IIT Delhi who had done their third-year internship in Bengaluru had specifically told me that there are a lot of water bodies and waterfalls near Bangalore. Though the phrase water bodies had sounded strange, I was thrilled to move to Bengaluru.

To know more about the things to do and places to see in Karnataka, I browsed through its pictures online. Mighty tigers, shy leopards, sloth bears, colonial and heritage buildings such as the Bangalore Vidhan Soudha and Mysore palace, lush tea and coffee estates, tall palms and coconuts fringing the highways, sunrises from hills, caves, turquoise beaches, foreigners in groups, women in heavy traditional gold jewelry — the plethora of pictures that came up when I searched about Karnataka gave me an idea about the state.

Frankly, I was still clueless about what I was going to experience here.

My decade-long romance with Karnataka has enriched me both physically and spiritually. Now I have a long list of popular and offbeat places of Karnataka I’ve seen and experienced. But when I discover places like the Belligundi waterfall, I wonder if I would ever be able to say that I have seen enough...

Kudumari or Belligundi falls is one of the magnificient waterfall in western ghat forest (shimoga-udupi dist border) dropping from height of 300ft in single step. There are 2 routes to reach this falls, one is from Sagar side from Kattinakaru Attimane village, need to trek for 8kms down side. And other route is from Byndoor side from Tudalli Chagatkal village, need to trek for 3kms upside inside dense forest. We went through Chagatkal village trekked 3km it took 1hr, trekking is not much difficult but route looks little dangerous. You can see some marks in trees and stones inside forest to show route. Rocks near falls is slippery. To reach base of falls we need to cross rocks around 100ft distance. Worth visit. This is less tourist visiting falls. Most of Tourists are visiting nearby Koosalli falls. You can see remotely this Twin falls Koosalli and Kudumari from Tudalli village. It looks awesome during rainy season, but not recommended to visit during rainy season (June to Sept-October). Best time to visit Nov to Jan.

(Caution: During our trekking we saw fresh Tiger footprint, see uploaded image. So be careful while...

Its a amazing falls and must explore if u r explorer and travel enthusiast You need to trek for around 2.5 kms to reach to the final spot. How to reach - from NH 66, take a deviation near shiroor towards koosalli and travel for a. Distance of 10 kms , after reaching koosalli..take a deviation towards Athyadi and travel for around 5kms. Before the Athyadi govt school you will get a small left deviation road after crossing the bridge which goes near the rubber plantation..take that road and travel for around 2 kms till the road ends...you can park ur vehicle over there... Initial starting point of the trek is bit confusing as there are no signboards ask for locals for the initial pathway, it's just before the end of the mud road...u need to walk upwards to get to the initial path once u get the initial pathway..trek along the route there are markings mentioned in some places so that we will not get lost along the way.....u can reach the falls in 1 hr...last 100 mtrs of trek is bit slippers and you need to trek along the water stream...

This water fall comes under a restricted forest zone, and you strictly need permission from the forest department. If you try to enter illegally, you will surely be reported by locals, and if caught, you will be prosecuted under the Wildlife Act with up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of up to 25,000. So, it is better not to try and enter illegally. Best to enquire with forest department Byndoor/Kundapura range before you make a journey here.
