Dwarasamudra or Halebeedu was the capital of the Hoysala empire in the 12th century. The main attraction of the town is the The Hoysaleshwara temple. The temple complex is known for its fine architecture. The temple is situtated adjacent to a man made lake from which the name Dwarasamudra (Dwara - gate, Samudra - sea) is derived. The temple complex and idols are partly damaged due to the continuous raids of the Delhi sulthanate armies. Today, whatever remains of the temple is very well maintained, the landscaping around the temple is also very well maintained.
