The Gadag Zoo, officially known as the Dr. V.M. Salimath Zoo, is a small but charming wildlife park located in Gadag, Karnataka. Though not as large or famous as other zoos in Karnataka, this zoo has its own local charm and offers a peaceful escape for families, students, and nature enthusiasts.

Spread over a modest area, the zoo houses a variety of animals including leopards, deer, crocodiles, peacocks, monkeys, and several species of birds. Visitors often appreciate the relatively clean enclosures and the greenery spread across the premises. The zoo staff make an effort to maintain the surroundings, and many of the animals appear well-cared-for, though some cages could certainly benefit from more space and enrichment activities.

What makes Gadag Zoo particularly appealing is its calm atmosphere — unlike the crowded big-city zoos, it’s rarely packed, allowing visitors to enjoy a quiet walk among the trees while observing the animals at leisure. The entry fees are quite affordable, making it accessible for local families and school groups.

However, the zoo does have areas for improvement. Educational displays about the animals are minimal, and interactive or conservation-based exhibits are lacking. The amenities like restrooms, drinking water, and seating areas could also use upgrades. If the government or local bodies invest in enhancing these aspects, the zoo could become a stronger local attraction and a meaningful educational space.

Overall, Gadag Zoo offers a simple but enjoyable experience, especially for families with children or wildlife lovers passing through the region. It may not match the scale of major zoos, but its peaceful setting and affordable entry make it a pleasant stop if you’re in Gadag.

The entry fee is very affordable, making it easy for local families and school groups to visit. The enclosures are fairly well maintained, though some could definitely be improved with more space and enrichment for the animals. Gadag zoo, also known as Binkadakatti Zoo is in Gadag, which is nestled between Hubli and Hampi. Gadag is a small sleepy town which was evident by almost nobody on road by 09:00 and even the ticket counter was not operational at opening time. Next around 20 minutes we spent looking at colourful animal sculptures on the entrance wall and guessing which we can actually see inside. Supposed to be Karnataka's 2nd largest zoo covering a large area. If you are allergic to walking, help is there in form of battery operated vehicle. We could see many animals including tigers, bears, crocodiles, monkeys, many birds but the highlight was presence of many boards describing differences between animals who are usually confused ( For example Panther, Cheetah and Leopard etc) Another interesting adventure was few monkeys jumping out of their enclosure from a small broken part. We were surprised to know how fast we could move after seeing those break loose monkeys! Timing 09:00-17:30 Entry Adults Rs 30, Children 5-12 Rs 10, Camera Rs 10, Video 50 Vermi-compost Rs 6 per Kg (Yes! we saw that on the board and asked for it. We were asked to collect while going out and indeed they got us with no cost environment friendly bag)

The zoo is worth visiting if you want to spend an hour or two alone or with family and children. It houses a limited but some exotic number of animals. Especially different varieties of Pheasant, Eagle, Neelgai, Ostrich, Hyna and Jackle. Apart from that Lion, tiger and black buck, spotted deer. The entrance ticket for adults is 50₹, and 30₹ for the children. There is a dedicated paved path to roam around the zoo, with proper signs and boards explaining the details about the animals which are housed here. The Battery operated vehicle is available at the premises, it has the capacity of 6+ member, costs 50₹ per person. Elders and specially abled can make use of it. There is dedicated play area for the children. Toilets are available inside the zoo. No food or eatery inside the zoo, better carry food if you are planning to spend more time. The big bird cage walk needs to be opened for the public, to get the closer look at birds. Sufficient parking available for the Two wheeler and four wheelers, Parking fee is 30₹ and 50₹ respectively.
