The Gulbarga Fort is found in the Gulbarga district in North Karntaka, built in 1347. The Gulbarga fort is one of the finest examples of the ancient Islamic architecture in Karnataka. The fort was originally built by Raja Gulchand. As Gulbarga gained prominence as the Bahmani capital, the fort was fortified by Alauddin Bahmani with a deep moat and massive walls. But according to Wikipedia the fort was built by Al-ud-din Bahmani of the Bahmani Dynasty after he cut off his ties with the Delhi Sultanate. The fort is built with well planning the canal is made around the fort so that it becomes difficult to the enemy. Krishna River and Bhima River flow very close to the fort. Predominantly black soil is found in this area, and is situated in the drought prone region. The fort contained 15 towers and 26 guns of which one was 8 metres long. History of Gulbarga Fort In the 6th Century the Rashtrakutas ruled over the area. But later the Chalukyas ruled over the place for almost two hundred years. But at the end the Hoysalas took over. Muhammad bin Tughlug occupied the Deccan in the early 14th Century. The revolt of the Muslim officers appointed from Delhi resulted in founding of the Bahmani Sultanate in 1347 by Hassan Gangu, who chose Gulbarga (named as ‘Ahsenabad’ during this period) to be his capital. The capital of the Bahmani Kingdom was Gulbarga, with its headquarters at the Gulbarga Fort. The Bahmanis ruled over most of Deccan until the late 15th Century and early 16th Century, then the kingdom was divided into five independent states.

Gulbarga Fort is a wonderful fort which is not maintained at all, but is a good destination to spend a few hours climbing and exploring. The main attraction of the fort is the cannon. Gulbarga Fort cannon or the "Bara Gazi Toph" measures 29 ft in length, with a circumference of 7.6 ft and is believed to be the largest cannon in the world. Tsar Cannon (17.5 feet) 15th century Russia si supposedly the world largest cannon on record. Which is about 12 ft smaller than the one in gulbarga. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the State Archaeology Department have not taken any serious steps to make it a popular destination for the tourists and, for no reason, the largest and deadliest cannon in the world kept in the fort in Kalaburagi is in a state of neglect. Interestingly three of the longest cannons in the world are in India. The Gulbarga cannon is 29 feet long, Nizamabad cannon is 23 feet and Jaipur cannon is 20.2 feet. It is unfortunate that the authorities concerned did not take the effort to measure the cannons lying in several Indian forts. Nor have any researchers or historians done a proper study on the historical cannon.

The fort is about 4km from the railway station and has definitely seen better days. It could use better upkeep and maintenance but if you are a history buff and want to get this off your checklist, can stop by for a quick visit and can expect to spend about 1-1.5 hours, shouldnt take more than that. There are 2 main places of attraction - the Jamia Masjid and a fort structure as soon as you pass the moat walls which has 3 cannons on top. But you can walk around inside premises. There is reference to longest canon made with 5 alloys called bara top but the entry to that canon top has been closed. I was told that by the local guard that the canon had fallen and is not safe and has been closed to the public for now. The guard opens the fort structure around 9:30 and the mosque is also open after 10. So if you reach there early, you can still just walk around the premises and check out the places once they are open. There are no shops inside the fort so make sure to carry enough water and eatables but dont litter the place.

I recently visited the historic Gulbarga Fort, and I must say it was an intriguing experience. As I walked through the fort's ancient walls, I felt a sense of nostalgia and awe at the architectural marvel. *Pros:* - Rich history and cultural significance - Impressive architecture and fortifications - Well-maintained premises - Insightful into the region's past *Cons:* - Limited amenities and facilities for visitors - Some areas were restricted or closed - Could benefit from more informative signage and guides *Overall:* Gulbarga Fort is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those interested in exploring India's cultural heritage. While there's room for improvement in terms of visitor amenities, the fort's historical significance and architectural grandeur make it a worthwhile experience. *Rating:* 4/5 stars
