Most beaches such as Kodi beach and nearby stretches are not crowded and safe for kids even for a late night walk post dinner. Around 8AM you can see the fishermen casting huge nets to catch fish - Kids love this. You can also give the fishermen a helping hand to pull the sticks attached to nets. Kodi also has a long sea-walk and Lighthouse. Be sure to collect the beautiful large purple sea shells found here in abundance. Safety Note : When playing in water be watchful of deep and strong waves here. I put a life jacket on my 7yr old son at all times just to be safe.
Drive : Drive down to Murdeshwara through the renowned Maravante beach with picturesque views on both sides. If you don't wish to drive that far you can drive down along the beach until Sasthan( towards Udupi) which is about a 45 min drive but roads are narrow.
Boating : You can hire a boat at the passenger boat stop near the skywalk starting point. Rs 100 per person for a 20 min ride. If you are in a group (upto 12 people) it's best to hire full boat for an hour to tour the backwater Mangroves and Sand Island ( Rs 1,200 ). Between 8-10AM you can take the boat into the sea to the Bande Kallu (large rock island) off the coast. This was the highlight of our trip and the island is just heavenly. Great for taking photos and watching the thousands of crabs that live there. The boat will halt at the island for up to an hour for you to explore. Full trip should take about 2 hours and cost Rs 3000.
A added bonus are the dolphins in the area. Ask the boatsman and he will switch off the boat to become noiseless and allow these friendly fish to come near the boat.
Safety Note : The rocks are bit slippery at the edges of the Bande kallu due to the moss so please watch out for that.
There are no boats available to St. Marys Island from Kundapura. For that you have to drive down to Malpe beach (1 hr drive) and take the ferry from the jetty or small motor boats from the beach...

Kodi beach is pretty much clean like Kaup beach. Sure, here & there wastes are littered, & that's the disgusting part. I'm a stickler to responsible conduct & behavior especially in matters regarding the environment & our ecosystem; so, definitely Kodi doesn't meet the standards like the Blue Flag Beach at Padubidri. However, it's a hope that, perhaps The Blue Flag tag for Padubidri is a beginning. This entire stretch has the potential to bag that covetted tag ๐๐๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ณ it's our, every tourist's responsibility to maintain the beaches; the local people can be of help, but the onus is upon every single tourist. Tourism is a must, but with responsibility. Sans that, tourism is a nuisance which the local people perhaps understand, but the brunt is collectively borne by all of us, affecting the entire ecosystem. When it becomes "responsible tourism", it becomes win-win for everyone. Kodi beach has a beautiful, long sea walk.
