It's a popular destination for trekkers, nature enthusiasts, and adventure seekers, offering stunning views, tranquil surroundings, and a refreshing climate.

Location and How to Reach from Chikmagalur Railway Station Distance: Mullayanagiri is about 20-25 km from Chikmagalur Railway Station. Ambience Scenic Beauty: The peak is surrounded by rolling hills, verdant forests, and coffee plantations, making it a photographer's paradise. The path leading up to the peak is adorned with lush greenery and wildflowers. Refreshing Climate: The weather is cool and breezy, even during summers. Monsoons enhance the beauty with mist and greenery but make the trek slippery. Spiritual Vibes: At the summit, you'll find a small Shiva temple, which adds a serene and spiritual touch to the atmosphere. Peaceful Escape: Far from the hustle of city life, it’s an ideal place for meditation, introspection, or simply unwinding amidst nature. What to Do at Mullayanagiri Trekking: The trek to Mullayanagiri is one of the most popular activities. The Sarpadhari Trail is the main route, known for its challenging, steep ascent. Relaxation: Simply enjoy the tranquility and cool breeze at the top while soaking in breathtaking views. Best Time to Visit Post-Monsoon and Winter (September to March): The weather is pleasant, and the trails are easier to navigate. Monsoon (June to August): The region becomes lush green, but trekking can be challenging due to slippery paths and heavy rainfall. Time of Day: Early mornings or late afternoons are best for clear views and a comfortable trek. Avoid Summers (April-May): While cooler than the plains, the mid-day heat can make trekking tiring. Activities to Enjoy Adventure: Ideal for trekking, camping, and exploring nearby caves. Meditation: The serene environment at the summit is perfect for meditation and yoga. Nature Walks: Wander through the nearby coffee plantations and forests for a closer experience of the region’s biodiversity. Tips for Visiting Mullayanagiri Trekking Gear: Wear sturdy trekking shoes, carry water, and pack light snacks. Chikkamagaluru was once my go-to destination for peaceful getaways – a place I proudly recommended to hundreds of friends and colleagues over the years. However, the recent experiences have been deeply disappointing and concerning, especially for out-of-state tourists. Here are the key issues I observed:

Harassment by Traffic and Local Police Out-of-state vehicles, particularly private ones, are being unfairly targeted by traffic and local police officials under the pretext of "checking." This seems more like a blatant attempt to extract money than ensuring law and order. Such selective targeting creates a hostile atmosphere and leaves a bad impression on genuine tourists.

Unjustified Forest Entry Fee Hike and Booking Restrictions The forest entry fee has been hiked drastically from ₹20 to ₹100, with an online-only booking system in place. While digitization is welcome, the lack of awareness and poor communication to tourists results in many being denied entry or forced to look for alternative (and often expensive) solutions. What's worse – these restrictions seem to conveniently support local yellow board (commercial) vehicles, allowing them to bypass limitations while private visitors suffer.

Unfair Restrictions at Mullayanagiri Peak Visitors in private vehicles are often stopped or restricted from going all the way to Mullayanagiri peak, again under the guise of safety or traffic control – yet local yellow board vehicles are allowed freely. This double standard is unacceptable and makes it clear that tourism here is being commercialized to favor certain interests.

Conclusion:

It’s disheartening to see such a beautiful destination turning into a money-making scheme through over-regulation, selective enforcement, and exploitation of unaware tourists. Unless the authorities act swiftly and transparently to address these issues, I – and many others – will have no choice but to boycott Chikkamagaluru and direct our support to more tourist-friendly...
