"A Journey Through Time: Yellur Fort's Rich History and Breathtaking Views"

Perched atop a hill, Yellur Fort in Belgaum is a testament to the region's rich history and architectural prowess. As I stepped into the fort, I felt like I was transported to a bygone era, surrounded by the remnants of a glorious past.

The fort's history dates back to the 17th century, and it's said that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the legendary Maratha king, had a significant connection to this fort. As I explored the fort's layout, I was struck by the ingenuity of the architects who designed this fortified structure to withstand invasions and sieges.

The trek to the top of the fort is moderately challenging, but the scenic views from the summit make it well worth the effort. As I climbed higher, the landscape unfolded like a canvas, with rolling hills, lush forests, and sparkling water bodies creating a breathtaking panorama.

The fort's architecture is a blend of rugged stonework and intricate carvings, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. Although parts of the fort are in ruins, the structure still exudes a sense of grandeur and majesty.

As I explored the fort, I noticed the various structures, including bastions, watchtowers, and gates, each with its own unique character. The fort's design and layout reflect the strategic thinking of its builders, who carefully planned the fortifications to maximize defense capabilities.

One of the highlights of my visit was the sense of tranquility and peace that pervades the fort. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I felt a deep sense of connection to the history and culture of the region.

The fort stands on an interesting topography. Yellur village, for long, has been a part of the fertile plateau located amidst the tapering ends of the Western Ghats surrounding Belagavi city. Areas like Sulebhavi-Balekundri, Ambewadi and Yellur are a part of the fertile soil that produces rich yields of paddy, lentils, vegetables, pulses and many such crops.

The hillock that the fort is built on has about five levels. So, the view of the fort changes as one moves towards the top of the hillock. It can be ascended by foot, which is the best way to experience the historical fort, or by road, which takes you right up to the main entrance of the fort. The soil on the hillock is shining white indicating traces of bauxite, the principal ore of aluminum. The main entrance door of the fort is grand but its design is deceptive. One has to take a turn to enter the door which means that the sentries would have seen you from at least three directions before you stepped in there. An arch flanks the door, which leads to the inside of the fort. Though not very large, the fort could accommodate the soldiers deployed there. A structure that appears to be a granary stands in a dilapidated condition. Also, a structure that looks like the foundation of another building could have been some kind of a settlement for the soldiers. One of the prominent structures at the fort is the well that is today fed with water from the base through pumps and pipes. It has been properly covered with an iron grill. The steps leading inside the well are sturdy and its inner walls have arches with a proper pulley facility to draw water. Another structure found here is the temple of Shiva. The temple has been renovated recently.

The fort is surrounded by strong walls on all sides, with ample peepholes for the guards. At one point of the fort, you can see a binocular window, through which one guard can watch opposite ends at the same time. Interestingly, the walls have small exit routes where one has to bend and enter in pitch-dark. These routes were probably used to come out of the fort in times of emergency, without alerting enemies who may have...

Yellur Fort Experience: A Memorable Sunday Visit

We visited Yellur Fort, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Karnataka. The experience was truly unforgettable.

As we approached the fort, the scenic beauty around was captivating, with lush greenery and a serene atmosphere. The fort itself stands as a testament to historical grandeur, offering glimpses into its rich past. The climb to the top was moderately challenging, but the panoramic views from the summit made every step worth it.

One of the highlights of our visit was the ancient Mahadev Temple inside the fort. The temple exudes spirituality and calm, making it a must-visit for devotees and those seeking peace. Another remarkable attraction is the majestic statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the largest on the fort. The statue stands tall, symbolizing strength and pride, surrounded by a beautifully maintained garden that adds to the fort’s charm.

Fast food items are conveniently available outside the fort, making it easy for visitors to grab a quick bite. However, one major concern we noticed was the littering inside the fort. Many visitors carry their meals inside, and unfortunately, some leave behind garbage and food leftovers, which tarnishes the fort’s natural beauty and historical significance.

Additionally, it was disheartening to see some couples engaging in unwanted and inappropriate activities in and around the fort, especially near the temple. Historical places like Yellur Fort and temples are sacred and deserve respect. Authorities should take steps to ensure such behavior is discouraged to preserve the sanctity and dignity of these sites.

Our Sunday at Yellur Fort was a blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty. While the experience was enriching, we hope visitors will take responsibility to keep the fort clean and show respect for its cultural and historical significance. If you’re planning to visit, make sure to carry water, wear comfortable shoes, and most importantly, leave the place as beautiful as...

Rajhansgad also know famously as Yellur Gad is located in the Belagavi Dist of Karnataka. It is around 12-15kms away from Belgaum city. It is an ancient fortress and is very famous for its heritage. Having located on a slight higher altitude, This place is visible from far off places as well. Coming to the Location: it is very iconic & gives you a feeling of pleasure. If you visiting this place in the rainy season, trust me you will witness the heaven over here and don't forget to carry umbrella. In my recent visit to this place early morning, i was stunned to see the beauty of mother nature which was covered fog & light drizzled. Entire fort wasn't visible due to the fog. It gave me a feeling as if I was walking in the clouds. Best place to hangout with friends and family. You will enjoy the views for sure. Their aren't any shops or restaurants or any kind of shops over here. And also one has to take the responsibility to maintain this place clean. Their is a Siddeshwara temple once you enter the fort. It is also seen that many people visit this fort for photoshoots as well. Altogether, This is one amongst the iconic locations which you should visit if you are visiting belgaum.

Yellur Fort is one of the most impressive historical places to visit in Belgaum. It is also known as Rajhansgarh fort perched at the top of a hill. The fort was built by the Ratta dynasty and later rebuilt or renovated in stone by Asad Khan Lari. It was strategically positioned as a watchtower to monitor enemy movements. A, 43 feet tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was inaugurated by Karnataka CM in the center of the fort on March 2, 2023, mentioning its significance during his era. Yellur fort has also a beautiful temple known as Siddheshwar (Lord Shiva) temple, is a significant landmark within the fort The fort is a major tourist attraction of the city offering a blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. Better to visit in the evening time to have a mesmerizing sunset views from the top. The roads approaching the fort are good, making the drive smooth and scenic. It is easily accessed by 2-4 wheels and has ample space for parking. Yellur Fort is open 24 hours a day, with no entry fee. Perfect place for a day hang out with family/ friends !!!.

It is a straighforward road from Belgaum. Climb to the fort by road is tiresome as the roads are the worst. But the place is just lovely. I visited on the weekday, but it was crowded then too. Not a fort, per say - but a fort'ish' structure. You climb the entrance and suddenly this ginormous plateau opens up before you. I was stunned for a second. And there's that statue of Shivaji Maharaj. It is a truly majestic statue. You can climb and walk on the fort walls and enjoy a gorgeous sunset. There were families, tours, couples..It was a lively scene. There's a small temple. There are a few vendors who sell mini snacks, but other than that there is no eating provision, better carry something if you eat round the clock. There's a washroom as well. The descent was easier than the climb, but please be on guard as the Maps does not show the same road you came by. I took a rather long and dark road towards Belgaum.
