"A Journey Through Time: Yellur Fort's Rich History and Breathtaking Views"
Perched atop a hill, Yellur Fort in Belgaum is a testament to the region's rich history and architectural prowess. As I stepped into the fort, I felt like I was transported to a bygone era, surrounded by the remnants of a glorious past.
The fort's history dates back to the 17th century, and it's said that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the legendary Maratha king, had a significant connection to this fort. As I explored the fort's layout, I was struck by the ingenuity of the architects who designed this fortified structure to withstand invasions and sieges.
The trek to the top of the fort is moderately challenging, but the scenic views from the summit make it well worth the effort. As I climbed higher, the landscape unfolded like a canvas, with rolling hills, lush forests, and sparkling water bodies creating a breathtaking panorama.
The fort's architecture is a blend of rugged stonework and intricate carvings, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. Although parts of the fort are in ruins, the structure still exudes a sense of grandeur and majesty.
As I explored the fort, I noticed the various structures, including bastions, watchtowers, and gates, each with its own unique character. The fort's design and layout reflect the strategic thinking of its builders, who carefully planned the fortifications to maximize defense capabilities.
One of the highlights of my visit was the sense of tranquility and peace that pervades the fort. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I felt a deep sense of connection to the history and culture of the region.

Read moreThe fort stands on an interesting topography. Yellur village, for long, has been a part of the fertile plateau located amidst the tapering ends of the Western Ghats surrounding Belagavi city. Areas like Sulebhavi-Balekundri, Ambewadi and Yellur are a part of the fertile soil that produces rich yields of paddy, lentils, vegetables, pulses and many such crops.
The hillock that the fort is built on has about five levels. So, the view of the fort changes as one moves towards the top of the hillock. It can be ascended by foot, which is the best way to experience the historical fort, or by road, which takes you right up to the main entrance of the fort. The soil on the hillock is shining white indicating traces of bauxite, the principal ore of aluminum. The main entrance door of the fort is grand but its design is deceptive. One has to take a turn to enter the door which means that the sentries would have seen you from at least three directions before you stepped in there. An arch flanks the door, which leads to the inside of the fort. Though not very large, the fort could accommodate the soldiers deployed there. A structure that appears to be a granary stands in a dilapidated condition. Also, a structure that looks like the foundation of another building could have been some kind of a settlement for the soldiers. One of the prominent structures at the fort is the well that is today fed with water from the base through pumps and pipes. It has been properly covered with an iron grill. The steps leading inside the well are sturdy and its inner walls have arches with a proper pulley facility to draw water. Another structure found here is the temple of Shiva. The temple has been renovated recently.
The fort is surrounded by strong walls on all sides, with ample peepholes for the guards. At one point of the fort, you can see a binocular window, through which one guard can watch opposite ends at the same time. Interestingly, the walls have small exit routes where one has to bend and enter in pitch-dark. These routes were probably used to come out of the fort in times of emergency, without alerting enemies who may have...

We visited Yellur Fort, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Karnataka. The experience was truly unforgettable.
As we approached the fort, the scenic beauty around was captivating, with lush greenery and a serene atmosphere. The fort itself stands as a testament to historical grandeur, offering glimpses into its rich past. The climb to the top was moderately challenging, but the panoramic views from the summit made every step worth it.
One of the highlights of our visit was the ancient Mahadev Temple inside the fort. The temple exudes spirituality and calm, making it a must-visit for devotees and those seeking peace. Another remarkable attraction is the majestic statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the largest on the fort. The statue stands tall, symbolizing strength and pride, surrounded by a beautifully maintained garden that adds to the fort’s charm.
Fast food items are conveniently available outside the fort, making it easy for visitors to grab a quick bite. However, one major concern we noticed was the littering inside the fort. Many visitors carry their meals inside, and unfortunately, some leave behind garbage and food leftovers, which tarnishes the fort’s natural beauty and historical significance.
Additionally, it was disheartening to see some couples engaging in unwanted and inappropriate activities in and around the fort, especially near the temple. Historical places like Yellur Fort and temples are sacred and deserve respect. Authorities should take steps to ensure such behavior is discouraged to preserve the sanctity and dignity of these sites.
Our Sunday at Yellur Fort was a blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty. While the experience was enriching, we hope visitors will take responsibility to keep the fort clean and show respect for its cultural and historical significance. If you’re planning to visit, make sure to carry water, wear comfortable shoes, and most importantly, leave the place as beautiful as...
