Shri Nuggikeri Hanuman Temple,
This temple has a mythological and historical background to it.
Mythological Background. The Hanuman statue at this temple dates to the time of Pandavas of Mahabharata during Dwaparyuga. Valiant Abhimanyu's son Maharaja Parikshit died due to a snake bite. To avenge his father's death, his son Maharaja Janamejaya performed a 'Yajnya', and all snakes were burnt to ashes by the sacrificial fire.
The holy sage, named Aastika advised that killing snakes was a sin, a crime. To atone for his sins, Maharaja Janamejaya heard all the verses of the Mahabharata Purana from Shri Vyshampayana (disciple of Maharishi Shri Vedavyas). Even then he was not satisfied. He then gave away his kingdom to his children and went to the southern part of Bharat - Kishkindha. He stayed at the present day Hampi in Karnataka for 28 years on the banks of the lake Pampa and river Tungabhadra, which is also Hanuman's birthplace. To relieve himself of his sins, he installed idols of Hanuman.
Our Nuggikeri Hanuman is also one of those, who has been installed by Maharaja Janamejaya himself.
Historical Background. Years later, various invasions took place in Bharat. The people in and around the city hid all the statues of the temples in water bodies like lakes, wells etc. Our Nuggikeri Hanuman is also one of those who dwelled in this very lake.
In the 15" century, during the rule of Shri Krishnadevaraya (1471-1529) of Vijayanagar empire, the patron-saint Shri Vyasaraja Tirtha (1447-1539) reinstalled Nuggikeri Hanuman at this very place. The Yantrodharaka Hanuman idol also has been installed by Shri Vyasaraja Tirtha and he has installed 732 Hanuman idols.
This sacred land, once where Agastya Rishi performed a penance and where installation of Nuggikeri Hanuman idol took place, was handed over to the Desai family of Dharwad by the Peshwas. Desai family members are looking after the Pooja and temple administration in the form of a 'Paryaya."
Nuggikeri-the Name. When it rains heavily, water gushes forcefully through every corner of the hillocks, which in Kannada is called 'nugguvudu' i.e., to gush forcefully. The result is the formation of a lake. Hence the name Nuggikeri (Nuggu-gush forcefully, Keri-lake).
The Sacred Hanuman idol. The Hanuman idol is about four and a half feet tall and is facing both east and south. Though Hanuman appears to look through the corner of His eye, both eyes are clearly visible. It is believed that any person who prays with devotion, the Lord blesses him, It is also believed that Hanuman fulfills all wishes of the devotees. The features of the sacred Idol like loincloth (Kaupina), the knotted tuft of hair on his head (Juttu), sacred thread on the shoulder (Jenivu), the sacred thread worn as a girdle (Ududaar), divine Saugandhika flower (sweet, scented Lotus) in His left hand and the fearless stance of His right hand (Abhaya Hasta) makes all devotees forget themselves and pray to Nuggikeri Hanuman. His Lord Shri Ram and Sita Mata appear on top of the Hanuman idol in the form of Vishnu as a sacred Shaligram and Chakrankita, who also bless the devotees. Hence Nuggikeri Hanuman temple is a sacred...
