It's a great temple shrine in the northern most part of Karnataka in Tumkur district, just adjacent to Andhra Pradesh,The Abode of The third and last part of The Great Serpent God, the first being Kukke Subramanya, the middle being Dodda Ballapura and the third one, Nagalamadike. Yesterday as it was shashti, a sacred day for Subramanya, we visited the temple. As our relatives had some Anna santharpana, we stayed there till evening and returned to Nellore via ananthapur. It was a very nice experience. In the morning, the temple priest did Mahanyasa Purvaka Ekaadasa Rudrabhishekam with the help of his associates where I also participated. There was panchamruthabhishekam. It was also done without any deviation from the sasthra. Ashtothara pujas were going on. Many devotees attended and were blessed. Regarding Anna santharpana, there are legendary stories. The old customs have gone giving place to new trends. People used to crawl on the already eaten banana leaves of Brahmins. Now that custom is gone by a high court verdict. As many people come to do it now also keeping aside the verdict, as was the case previously, there were police and revenue officials to prevent them. It may be transition period now. People may forget it in future and there may not be tight security as we have now.
From another angle, it was also inconvenient to the boarders as the devotees attacked as soon as butter milk, the last item in the menu was served. Now that problem is gone. We can eat till the end.
From medical point of view, the remainings of food, all the items together, on fresh banana leaves might have certain curing effects which our modern science may take some more time to understand. Then again the same may repeat if something happens to a member who fought against the custom today.
Another alarming thing I found was we were not allowed to remove the already eaten banana leaves. It's a free service, people like me, render . Why should they go for a paid service. The wallet may not permit always. It is a service they are doing. They must minimise the expenditure to continue for longer periods. I believe in future if dining table system comes, problem may be solved. Also they should not make it mandatory for the staff to do the cleaning work. Now that food is served on the ground. It is difficult for both boarders to sit on the ground and for the servers to serve. A change is sure to take place, if not sooner.
To sum up, it was really a wonderful experience.
