The drive from Kollur Mookambika to Sringeri & Horanadu has always been thrilling and refreshing to me for it being the way that goes through Agumbe with all the twists and turns in the Ghat section. It also tests ones driving skills to the core, particularly when some vehicle takes a sudden halt while you are maneuvering a tricky turn while going up to Agumbe and Someshwara Wild Life Sanctuary.

My friends in another car were following me. I come to this place every year, but it was all new experience for the other people in my friends car. So they were driving a bit slow and that gave me a whole lot of time to reach Agumbe first and click some really beautiful pics of the nature.

Twice previously, I got to drive through this place during midnight so could not stop at Agumbe, but this time, I grabbed the opportunity of going up to the Sunset View Point. The view was breathtaking. One will sink totally in to the arms of the mother nature, with the sounds of nearby waterfalls, now and then ringing bells of Swamy Venugopala Temple, and birds chirping, butterflies of various colors trying to extract the sweet from flora.

Words are not sufficient to narrate the beauty of Agumbe..... can only be experienced.....

My friend Leela was thanking me from behind.... said her mind just recalled old Kannada song "Agumbeya Prema Sanjeya..."

Meanwhile, my friends too joined us and after spending a good 1 hour time at Agumbe, we continued our journey to another spell-bounding place ...... Horanadu ..... Annapurneshwari and Kudremuka..... with a night halt at Sringeri for the Maata...

Located in the Udupi and Shivamogga districts of Karnataka, Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary is a breathtakingly lush and ecologically rich forest area spread over 314 sq. km. It is a crucial part of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and connects with Kudremukh and Mookambika sanctuaries, forming a vital corridor for wildlife movement. The sanctuary gets its name from the ancient Someshwara Temple, located in the heart of the forest near Agumbe – a place often called the "Cherrapunji of the South" due to its high rainfall. Someshwara is blanketed with dense evergreen rainforests, bamboo groves, and riverine ecosystems fed by the Seetha, Sita Nadi, and Kumaradhara rivers. It is home to several species of mammals like leopards, gaurs, lion-tailed macaques, barking deer, and Malabar giant squirrels, as well as reptiles like king cobras and endemic frogs. Agumbe, at the edge of the sanctuary, also hosts the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS), established by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker, known for king cobra research and rainforest conservation. Historically, the forests of Someshwara were under royal rule and protected as sacred groves. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1974 to preserve its unique biodiversity and protect endangered species. The best time to visit is November to February, when the rains recede and the weather is cool and misty. Monsoons (June to September) transform the forest into a green wonderland, but trekking becomes difficult due to leeches and slippery terrain. The sanctuary map includes points of interest like: Agumbe sunset point Jogi Gundi and Onake Abbi waterfalls Someshwara temple area Kudlu Theertha Falls Seethanadi Nature Camp for eco-tourism and guided forest walks. In conclusion, Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary is a mosaic of rainforests, sacred heritage, and scientific significance. It’s not just a forest visit – it’s an immersion into Karnataka’s living, breathing ecological heritage.
