Shorapur , also spelled as Surpur, nestled in the rocky hills on the highway connecting Bidar - Srirangapattan. Surpur Samsthana - the Nayaka Rulers - has the legacy of Valor- Courage- indomitable spirit of fighting for the motherland. The Nayaka Rulers were ardent supporter and preservers of Art - Music - Culture - Craftsmanship. The Nayakas were ferocious - courageous and so ambitious that they went to the places as far as Puducherry and defeated the French in just two days ! Somewhere around 1682 Moghul forces led by Diler Khan were defeated and brutally slaughtered in such a way that the blood stains of the Moghul forces were on the stones of the fort - now called also as ' lal gad ' ( red fort ). Right hand palm's impression of Aurangzeb declaring his defeat and surrender drafted in Persian language is still preserved in the Surpur Darbar. A grand Venugopal Swamy Temple with a Pushkarni is worth seeing. Durbar near the temple houses the portraits , guns, swords , emblem , royal insignia and other documents of historical context and importance. A huge Nandi Statue in adjacent Venkatapura is a fascinating sculpture by famed 12th century sculptor Jakkanna Acharya. Shibar Bandi a hamlet off the Surpur - Lingasugur has the legend that Prabhu Shri Ramchandra Ji shot an arrow here. The arrow is still stuck in a boulder - a small temple is built around it.

The last ruler of Shorapur, Raja Venkatappa Nayaka, is remembered for his resistance against the British East India Company during the 1857 rebellion. Due to conceit and scheme of the British and Turab Ali Khan - the Salar e Jung of Nizam of Hyderabad he was killed and rumours were spread that he committed suicide. Sad and Unfortunate fact is that such a legacy of warriors of Surpur Sansthana never got their place in the text books of history. The Surpur Sansthana should be taught from KG to PG at length, else the coming generation will never know that such a great and inspiring legends of Nayakas of Surpur existed. I thank Dr. Shivayya Associate Professor of Kannada, GFGC Raichur for facilitating our trips with guidance of Sri. Srinivas Jaalwadi , Sri. Raghvendra Bhakri. I am grateful to Sri. Shivakumar Swamy the curator of Durbar for all the information and insights he shared with us. I appreciate the support of Dr. Raghvendra Nayak , Assistant Professor of English GFGC Raichur in making videos and taking pictures. I must also thank Dr. Shivaraj , Assistant Professor of Zoology, LVD College Raichur for his patience. I thank Navin our driver who took us to these wonderful places - manoeuvring through small lanes across Surpur. I humbly request you to visit this place and spread the Saga of Courage and Bravery of Nayakas of...

Very good tourist place in yadgir district

Shorapur is known for the Sri Venugopla Swami Temple. Even today all the disciplines offered in the Tirumala Temple at Tirupati were started from the contribution of then Surpur (Shorapur) Kings. They never visit the Tirumala temple, but a representative would be sent on their behalf. From 1703 the Bedar (Tribal) Kingdom rose and ruled it up to 1858, with the last king being Nalvadi Venkatappa Nayak.Bonal Bird Sanctuary is located about 10 km from Shorapur.

The major Occupation of people around here is farming. Shorapur is a large producer of Cotton,Pulses & Paddy. Major attractions are The Fort(Darbar), Taylor manzil, Gopalswami Temple, Jain Temple,...

Well maintained beautiful palace of Raja Nalwadi Ventakappa Nayaka, the young freedom fighter of Surapura Aasthana, was at the forefront of the fight against the British. Venkatappa Nayaka was crowned king of independent Surapura state at the age of 23 years. He was one of the heroes of the uprising of 1857 against the British.

The authorised person didn't allow us to visit. "Due to elections no one is allowed inside", he said. Not a good experience 😕. But it's pretty nice place. Lot of heritage in such a busy place. The Venugopala Swamy temple nearby can be seen from a window of this palace.
