It is believed that Alathiyoor Perumthikovil (Hanuman Kavu) Temple was erected and consecrated by Sage Vasishta, who is prominent among the Saptarshis, some 3000 years ago. Long ago, the Alathiyoor Grama Namboodiri was in possession of this Temple. Afterwards it was taken over by Vettath Raja. A little later, the Zamorin Raja of Kozhikode took over the management of this temple. Presently, the temple continues to be administered by His Highness Zamorin Raja of Calicut.

The temple of Sri Hanuman is adjacent to the main temple of Sri Rama, who is the presiding deity. Sri Hanuman stands leaning a little towards the left, symbolic of how he hears his master’s words. Sri Rama is confiding in Hanuman the cue-word ( Abhignana Vaakyam ) that would enable him to gain the confidence of Sita. Hanuman has a mace in his hand. All the Gods blesses Lord Hanuman with all their powers. He is all set to accomplish his mission of finding out the whereabouts of Devi Sita. Here he is the personification of divine strength, confidence, concentration of purpose, Bhakti, and above all humility. He is the symbol of supreme self-sacrifice. He seems to be assuring Sri Rama: “Your wish is my command”. Devotees of Hanuman visit the temple to make their wishes fulfilled and be heard by the mighty Hanuman.

There is a platform to commemorate Sri Hanuman’s mighty leap to Lanka over the sea. There is a long granite stone at one end of this platform and it symbolizes the sea. Devotees com running and leap over this long stone. By doing this, auspicious impact is expected especially for the better health and life of children.

Kuzhacha Avil Nivedyam is very special to Hanuman Swami.

Visiting the Alathiyur Hanuman Temple was one of the most spiritually uplifting experience, situated in Alathiyur, near Tirur in Malappuram district, Kerala, this ancient temple believed to be over 3,000 years old is one of the most frequently visited by devotees. One of the temple’s most remarkable features is the idol of Lord Hanuman, said to have been consecrated by Sage Vasishtha. The idol shows Hanuman leaning forward in deep devotion, as though attentively listening to Lord Rama’s instructions before setting off on his legendary journey to Lanka in search of Sita. Adding to the temple’s uniqueness is a beautifully crafted granite structure symbolising Hanuman’s leap across the ocean. At one end is a large black stone representing the sea. Devotees run along this ridge and leap over the stone, reenacting Hanuman’s leap—a ritual believed to bring good luck, health, and prosperity. In addition to Rama and Hanuman, the temple is also home to other deities including Lakshmana, Ganesha, Maha Vishnu, Durga, Bhadrakali, Ayyappan, and serpent deities (Nagas). The temple’s architecture reflects traditional Kerala style, rich in cultural and spiritual heritage. The temple is currently managed by a trust under the Malabar Devaswom Board, with the Samuthiri (Zamorin) serving as the Chief Trustee. The main offering here is Aval (sweetened beaten rice), which is considered highly auspicious. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays are especially significant for Hanuman worship, and the temple tends to be busier on these days. How to Reach: Nearest Railway Station:- Tirur Railway Station – Approximately 12 km from the temple. You can take an auto rickshaw or local bus to reach.Nearest Bus Stop: Alathiyur Bus Stop – From here, it's a short ride by auto rickshaw...

Very famous Hindu Temple. Even though the main deity of the temple is Lord Rama (without Sita, a rare combination), the temple is famous as "Hanuman Temple". The temple of Sri Hanuman is adjacent to the main Temple of Sree Rama, with his head bent towards Lord Rama. Sree Rama is telling Hanuman the “MUDRA Vaakyam” that would enable Sita to identify him as Rama Duta (messenger of Rama). The temple of Lord Lakshmana is away from Rama and Hanuman so that he can't be hearing the cue-word. The pose of divine Sri Hanuman is mixed with strength, confidence, concentration, Bhakti and humility! Sri Hanuman is assuring Sree Rama: “Kindly tell me your wish and I will execute it”. Devotees of mighty Hanuman come to this temple to make their wishes come true. It is believed that Sri Hanuman jumped to Lanka from here. Elders used to ask children to chant HIS name avoid bad dreams at night! The Vazhipaddu (offering to aTemple) for Hanuman is “Kuzhacha Avil – Naazhi” (Flattened rice, mixed with jiggery, etc. – a very special mix – lasts for a week or so) and “Paal Paayasam” (Rice Gheer) for Sree Rama. The current custodian of the temple is Samoothiri of Kozhikode. The "Purumthrikkovil idol" of the deity Hanuman was consecrated 3000 years ago by Vasistha Marshi. Reasonably well maintained Toilets are available along with a Temple Pond. Car Parking is reasonably large. Contact details are in the Photo.
