9 reviews #78 of 199 things to do in Kochi (Cochin)Waterfalls Write a review What people are saying Shyju C By Shyju C “Clean and safe Waterfall for families to Enjoy” Jan 2020 Ideal time to visit the waterfall is till Jan mid. Beyond this the amount of water flowing reduces and by Feb hardly any water. It will be awesome if you can visit in Rainy season or just after Rainy season. The best part of the waterfall is that it is ideal for families with young childrens. The place is very clean and they charge and entry fee of only ten rupee. There is a top deck which is very flat and this space is ideal for children under 15 to enjoy fall but only under the supervision of an elderly. So what are you waiting for... Let's pack and gooo... SYju A By SYju A “Good waterfall in the outskirts of Kochi that is easily accessible” Oct 2019 Unlike other waterfalls, you dont need to travel inside forest area or remote locations to reach Areekkal. It is very near (within 7-8km) to the main road that connects Kochi to Munnar (Via Kolenchery, Muvattupuzha) and not a crowded location. It is safe to get into the water too Suggest edits to improve what we show. Improve this listing

Areekkal Waterfalls is a captivating natural attraction located in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, near the town of Piravom. Nestled amidst lush greenery and rubber plantations, Areekkal is an ideal destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and families looking for a refreshing escape from the city hustle.

Location and Accessibility The waterfall is situated approximately 35 kilometers from the city of Kochi and is easily reachable by road via the Piravom-Onakal route. It lies within the Pampakuda Panchayat area and is close to Piravom town, which serves as a convenient base for visitors. The nearest railway station is in Ernakulam, about 36 kilometers away, while Cochin International Airport is approximately 45 kilometers from the site. Visitors commonly access Areekkal Waterfalls by car or taxi, with parking facilities available nearby.

The water tumbles over rocky ledges into a natural pool below, which offers visitors a chance to cool down during hot weather. The surrounding landscape features dense forests and tranquil countryside vistas, making it a serene spot for picnics, trekking, and photography.

The waterfall is especially spectacular during the monsoon season from May to October when the increased water flow intensifies its beauty and sound. However, the area remains attractive in the dry season as well, providing a peaceful environment for relaxation.

Picnicking: The calm areas near the falls make perfect spots for families and friends to enjoy meals surrounded by nature.

Photography: The waterfall and the surrounding greenery are popular among photographers, especially during sunrise and sunset when the lighting enhances the natural beauty.

Swimming and Bathing: There are designated safe spots for visitors to bathe in the pooled water at the base of the waterfall, ideal for a refreshing dip.

Basic amenities such as changing rooms, bathrooms, and seating areas are maintained near the entrance for visitor convenience. However, food options are limited around the site, so carrying snacks or refreshments is advisable.

Nearby Attractions Areekkal Waterfalls is also a gateway to several other interesting destinations in Ernakulam:

Kochareekkal Caves: Located close by, these caves offer an adventurous exploration opportunity.

Koorumala View Point: A scenic hilltop viewpoint offering panoramic views of the valleys and forests.

Yesterday, my friends and I reached Arikal Waterfall at 8:00 am. We were the first visitors there so it was not very crowded. Arakal Water Falls opens at 8:00 AM and we entered with an entry ticket of Rs.20. As soon as we get the ticket and get inside, we can see a lot of stairs. There were both male and female washrooms and all the facilities for them to change their clothes but there is no locker or facility to keep our valuables. We were the only ones at the falls at that time so we could enjoy as much as we could. I found it to be a very nice waterfall for families and children to play in, nothing dangerous there but it will be very disappointing for those who want to swim. As I mentioned above it is a very safe place for children to play but for adults the water is up to their hips. So for those who want to spend quality time as a family it is a good place but for those who want to swim with their friends I suggest never go there. But all in all it is a good place to really enjoy with family and its views are very beautiful and it’s very safe. There are other waterfalls and pools nearby for those who want to swim. Arakal Water Falls is the best place to drop the kids if you are planning a day trip and coming with family. I may share below the date and pictures of the day I went Date:18/09/2024
