Ayyappancoil – a less known tourist attraction in Idukki

Ayyappancoil (Ayyappan Kovil) is a village, approximately 12 km far from Kattappana in Idukki District. It is said that   Ayyappancoil was a big township in early 1960s. During the construction of Idukki hydro-electric project, the township was evacuated by the Kerala government. When the dam came, the area was submerged in water and transportation for the people on the other shore became difficult. The authorities have built a hanging bridge across the river for facilitating movement of the people, who are mainly tribal communities, across the river. The hanging bridge is popularly known as the Ayyappancoil hanging bridge, which is one of the longest bridges in the zone. It connects the Ayyappancoil Grama panchayath and Kanchiyar Grama Panchayath in either banks of Periyar. The name of the village Ayyappancoil came from an old temple dedicated to Sastha (Lord Ayyappa), which was the major landmark in the area. The idol here is believed to be consecrated by sage Parashurama.  As per legends the Ayyappankovil temple is one among the ‘Panchamahakshethras’ – (five huge temples) built by ‘Parasurama’ in Dwapara Yuga. These five temples were built for 5 ‘Bhavas’ of Lord Ayyappa. Aaryankavu, Achancovil, Kulathupuzha, Sabarimala and Ayyappankovil are the five temples said to be built by Parasurama. An interesting fact is that the sreekovil stands alone when the temple submerges in water. Pilgrims on this occasion reaches the temple through small canoes in Periyar river. The temple was later replaced to a place called Thoppipala, which is on the Kattappana – Kuttikkanam...

A bridge that is one of a kind and attracts numerous tourists on a daily basis, the Ayyapancoil Hanging Bridge is one of the longest hanging bridges in Kerala. The region surrounding the bridge is so captivating and pleasant that it makes this place a perfect getaway spot for a weekend or an unplanned holiday. The hanging bridge is very stimulating to watch and exciting to take a stroll on. An engineering wonder which also happens to be the least explored place, the area that surrounds the bridge is not visited by a lot of tourists thereby making it retain its natural beauty to date.

The reservoir along with the Periyar River adds natural beauty to the bridge. While you take a walk on the bridge, the beauty of the unspoiled green surroundings is going to leave you awestruck with its scenic mountains, dense coconut trees and the freshness of the river water flowing. The views that you get from the bridge are going to leave you enthralled. Also, the surrounding reservoir and mountains make up for a spectacular view. So, next time whenever you feel like unwinding away from the screeching noise of the city, you definitely know...

Ayyappan Kovil Hanging Bridge Review

The Ayyappan Kovil Hanging Bridge is a picturesque marvel nestled amidst lush greenery, offering a serene and unique experience for visitors. This swaying bridge connects travelers to the ancient Ayyappan Kovil Temple, adding a sense of adventure to the spiritual journey.

The panoramic views from the bridge are breathtaking, with the river and surrounding hills creating a tranquil ambiance. However, the bridge's swaying motion can be a thrilling yet slightly nerve-wracking experience, especially for those unaccustomed to such structures.

While the charm of the bridge is undeniable, its condition reveals the need for maintenance. Some parts appear worn, which could be a concern for safety in the long term. Regular upkeep would enhance the experience and ensure it remains a cherished landmark for years to come.

Overall, the Ayyappan Kovil Hanging Bridge is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and pilgrims alike, blending scenic beauty with a touch of thrill on the way to a...

Ayyappancoil was a big township of area 86 sq.km in early 1960s with a population of 35,000. During the construction of Idukki hydro-electric project, the township was evacuated. The 200 m long Ayyappancoil hanging bridge is built across the Periyar River, connecting the Ayyappancoil with Kanchiyr. The older road bridge over the Periyar River is submerged by the waters of the Idukki Reservoir for about 6 months in the year during monsoon. The suspension bridge draws a lot of tourists owing to its picturesque scenery. On the other side of the bridge, Ayyappancoil Sastha temple situated on the banks of Periyar river is a main landmark of Ayyappancoil. The idol here is believed to consecrated by sage Parashurama himself. The temple is submerged when the water level in Idukki reservoir rises during the Southwest monsoon. The sreekovil has been raised so that it is above the water when the temple is submerged. Pilgrims reach the temple across the Idukki reservoir via small canoes.
