Muslim Navigators: al-Shaliat  Chaliyam, at small port south of Kozhikode at the time, is not regularly mentioned under this name in the Arabic and Persian geographical literature. It does feature in Abu al-Fida's Taqwin al-Buldan(14th century). Two fourteenth century Islamic tombstones are recorded at the site.

European Navigators: Chale/Challe/Chalia or Chaly

Saliyam: the home of the Saliya community. The Saliyas figure as the dominant weaving community in medieval South India. Presently, the Chaliya (Chaliyan or Saliya) is an Other Backward Class in Kerala.

Chaliyam is believed to be one of the location of the founding mosques of Kerala. As per this tradition, the qazi of the mosque established at Chaliyam was Taqy ud-Din. Batutah seems to have visited Chaliyam in 14th century AD. He describes the settlement: "I next came to the city of Shaliat, where the Shaliats are made and hence they derive their name. This is a fine city.. Some sources allude to the presence Jewishsettlements (12th and 13th centuries AD) in Chaliyam. As per a peace agreement between Portuguese Viceroy Nunho de Acunha and the Samutiri of Kozhikode, a Portuguese fort was constructed at Chaliyam in 1531 AD. The Fort Chaliyam was eventually besieged, captured and destroyed by the Kozhikode forces in 1571. A certain Portuguese officer called Attaide was in charge of the fort at this time. Chaliyam is also famous for the Khalasi.

Beypore Railway Station, incorrectly named, at Chaliyam was the terminus of the Madras Railway...

It's a lovely location and appreciations to tourism department and government for the plan to make it an international level destination. But few more things to be done, otherwise all works will be in vain. 1. An organized and spacious parking area and for both two wheelers and four wheelers should be arranged. Reasonable parking fee can be charged. 2. From entrance to main beach, there is almost a 600 meters road with rocks on either side, with no light, or side rails . Its very dangerous, especially at night that area is completely dark. Even few lines of LED lights will increase safety and beauty of the place 3. Entry for two wheelers also should be restricted. Its a tourist spot, not a public road. Instead arrange few electric cars/auto ( something like what we see in airpots or railway stations ), so that the spot will be disabled friendly. Even old age people, children and others who have difficult in walking can use. Even 10 or 20 rupees per person can be charged. 4. Please keep a proper maintenance team, security and cameras. Many more dust bins are needed. 5. I didn't noticed any toilets there, hope there is are hygienic restroom Many more like this can be Its a great spot, so i don't think peoplrs will hesitate to spend around 50-100 rs ( parking + entrance + electric car ), if all facilities are provided and proper hygiene is maintained. Hope we will a spot of international standards and it will provide revenue for government and residents of Chaliyar

Oceanus Chaliyam Beach is a hidden gem that beautifully combines tranquility with scenic beauty. The pristine shoreline, golden sands, and gentle waves create the perfect setting for a peaceful escape. The beach is less crowded, making it ideal for family outings or quiet moments to soak in nature’s beauty. The area is clean and well-maintained, which is refreshing compared to other tourist spots. The sunset views here are simply breathtaking—definitely a photographer’s paradise! Additionally, the nearby facilities and friendly locals add to the charm of the place. Whether you’re looking to relax, take a serene stroll, or spend quality time with loved ones, Oceanus Chaliyam Beach is worth a visit. Highly recommend it for anyone visiting the Kozhikode region!

I first visited Chaliyam Beach ⛱️ while beautification works were in progress. At the time, it was a clean and well-maintained beach, and I had a wonderful experience enjoying it with my family. Today, I revisited Chaliyam Beach, expecting an even better ambiance now that the beautification works were completed. However, I was disappointed ☹️ to find the beach untidy, with waste dumping and poorly maintained walkways. Littering was visible everywhere, which greatly affected the experience. The only positive aspect I noticed was the well-maintained washrooms. In summary, while the beach and walkways are well-constructed, poor maintenance by both the authorities and civilians has taken a toll on its appeal. 😡
