Theruvamala, also known as Chathamangalam Hills, is one of those places that still feels untouched by the usual rush of tourism. Tucked away in the eastern side of Kannur district, near Udayagiri and Alakode, this hill is slowly getting attention from travelers who prefer quiet, natural places over crowded viewpoints. I visited it recently, and honestly, it was one of the most peaceful trips I’ve had in Kerala.

The road to Theruvamala itself is part of the experience. From Kannur town, it takes around two to two and a half hours to reach. The roads are narrow and winding after Alakode, but the views keep getting better as you climb higher. You pass through rubber plantations, small houses surrounded by pepper and arecanut trees, and little tea shops where people still have time to smile and talk. It reminded me of how Kerala’s hilly villages used to be years ago.

Once you reach the top, the atmosphere changes completely. The air becomes cooler, the sound of vehicles fades away, and you’re surrounded by rolling grasslands and misty hills on all sides. From the viewpoint, you can see parts of Kasaragod and even bits of Karnataka on a clear day. During the early morning or late evening, clouds move across the hilltops like waves, and it’s hard not to just sit there and watch.

What I liked most was that Theruvamala hasn’t turned into a commercial tourist spot yet. There are no shops, loud music, or food stalls cluttering the area. It’s still raw and natural, which also means you need to come prepared — carry your own water, snacks, and proper shoes if you plan to trek. The trek itself isn’t too hard, but it can get slippery during the monsoon. The climb is short, but steep in some parts. The reward at the top, though, is absolutely worth it.

I also noticed a small waterfall nearby, which locals said is active mainly during the monsoon months. The people around the area were very friendly; a small family even offered us black tea from their home when they saw us walking back. That simple warmth is what makes trips like these memorable.

If you’re expecting adventure parks, fancy viewpoints, or cafes, this isn’t the place. But if you love silence, fresh air, and natural beauty, Theruvamala is perfect. It’s also a good spot for photographers — the mist, sunlight, and greenery combine beautifully.

The only drawback is the road near the top — it’s still partly untarred and could be difficult for cars with low ground clearance. Mobile network is weak too. But in a way, that isolation is part of its charm.

Overall, Theruvamala is a hidden gem in Kannur. It’s not for luxury travelers, but for those who love raw nature and the peaceful side of Kerala. I’d definitely recommend visiting before it becomes...

Theruvamala Near Cherupuzha..

If you're seeking a serene and picturesque spot to enjoy nature, Theruvanmala in Tabore near Cherupuzha is a must-visit. I recently went there to witness the sunset, and it was truly a memorable experience.

The trek to the top is moderately challenging, so it’s suitable for those with some experience. However, I wouldn’t recommend bringing children or elderly family members, as the path might be a bit difficult for them.

One of the highlights of Theruvanmala is its tranquility. Since it's not crowded, you can immerse yourself in the beauty of the surroundings without distractions. To make the most of your visit, plan to reach early so you can take your time exploring and soaking in the views.

Overall, Theruvanmala offers an unforgettable escape into nature and is perfect for those looking to unwind in a...

Chathamangalam hills is such a scenic beauty gifted by the western ghats. Treking difficulty is moderate. There is no entry fees and time restriction. As it is not a government authorized tourist spot , Due to no maintanence activities, Grass up there will grow taller than you which makes finding path difficult. Bring water as there is about more than 2 kilometers trekking to reach the top view point. This trekking is not suitable for aged/weak people. From the top you can enjoy the beautiful valleys and mountains sorrounding you which includes 'mt.kottathalachi' , 'kurishumala' and more.I will not recommend going there when it's a sunny day. Respect the nature , be adventurous , be carefull and responsible and have a...
