Chembra Peak the crown jewel of hiking in Wayanad. This spectacular trek takes you through lush green landscapes beneath the expansive blue skies, offering stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
Planning Your Hike The ticket counters open at 7:00 AM, and it's advisable to arrive 15 minutes early on weekdays and 30 to 45 minutes early on weekends due to increased footfall. Payments for tickets can be made digitally via Google Pay, eliminating the need for cash transactions.
As of now, the ticket price for a group of five is ₹4,000, which means if you are hiking with solo, or with 2-3 people, you’ll still be charged the full amount. To make your hike more economical, consider gathering a group of 4 to 5 to share costs.
Getting to the Starting Point
After acquiring your tickets, there’s a 15-minute drive followed by a 10-minute uphill trek to the actual starting point of the hike. Be prepared for a quick checkpoint where they inspect your bags—plastic bottles and containers are not permitted. If you wish to carry snacks, use steel Tiffin boxes, and only glass bottles for water. Thankfully, you’ll find two streams along the trail that offer fresh, cold water for hydration.
The Hiking Experience The trek begins amidst scenic tea plantations, leading to a second checkpoint where your ticket will be checked again. The actual hiking path features a gradual incline and offers moderate difficulty, making it unsuitable for beginners. The terrain can be rough and muddy, with varying landscapes that change every few minutes, adding to the breathtaking beauty of the environment.
Proper hiking shoes with good grip are essential, as are sunglasses and a jacket—especially since mornings can be windy and cold. Around 10:00 AM, the sun becomes strong, so having a cap and sunglasses will ensure your comfort.
The trail is well-marked and monitored by forest officers at four vantage points, giving you confidence that you're on the right track. Along the way, you'll come across a small lake before reaching the famed heart-shaped lake at the summit.
At the Summit: Heart-Shaped Lake Once you reach the peak, the awe-inspiring heart-shaped lake awaits. This picturesque spot is perfect for photography, especially from the west side of the lake. A selfie stick will help you capture stunning images against the backdrop of Wayanad’s lush greenery. Walking around the perimeter of the heart-shaped lake offers sweeping views of the city and its natural beauty, making this hike a truly unforgettable experience.
As you descend, remember to take it slow and enjoy the changing scenery one last time before leaving this beautiful landscape behind. Whether you're an experienced hiker or someone looking to immerse yourself in nature, Chembra Peak promises an adventure filled with breathtaking sights and memories to cherish.
