Uncle Judge (Judgi Ammavan) is the presiding deity at the Judgiammava Kovil which is a sub temple of Cheruvally Devi Kavu (temple) near Ponkunnam but it is more popular than the main temple because of the specialty of the deity worshiped here. In the 18th century, there lived a judge Govinda Pillai in erstwhile Travancore province, during the time of King Dharma Raja Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma. He was revered as a truthful and just executor of law, and had garnered an unshakeable reputation for his impartial judgements. In one of the cases that came up for hearing, Pillai pronounced the death sentence against his own nephew Padmanabha Pillai who was the accused. It was only after his order was executed, that Pillai realized that he had made an error in judgement and his nephew was innocent. This was really a shock to him. He approached the King and told the incident. Justice Govinda Pillai told the king that he committed a heinous crime by ordering an innocent to be killed and he should get the death penalty for this. He felt guilty and asked the King to give him Capital punishment, the King refused to do so. But Pillai was adamant and was not ready to go back from the decision. Finally, the king told him that the duty of the king is to execute the orders and only a judge can pass orders. He went back to his office and prepared an order clearly mentioning in the order that the intensity of the crime will be more if the same has been conducted by those who are responsible for ensuring law and order.
