Chittur Kavu is an ancient temple located in Chittur-Tathamangalam municipality. 'Kavu' is an Adobe or Temple where the cosmic energy is stored in the form divine figure or deity. The deity in this temple called 'Chittur Amma' or 'Devi' is considered to be a savoir of protecting the native people of Chittur from negative elementals. The story of the temple, goes back to over centuries, where the king 'Kongan' came to attack peaceful yet prosperous 'Chittur Desam', and the locals resorted to the goddess for protection. The goddess in the form 'Chittur Amma' took the sword and fought and abolished the mighty Kongan and his army. The goddess after victory, returned and stayed at the place where the temple is located currently. The devotees, even today, resort to goddess for protection. 'Chittur Amma' continues to bless those who seek her even today. Every year 'Kongan Pada' festival is celebrated in the remembereance of the event of war between goddess and king Kongan.

In Malayalam "Kavu" signifies the temple for goddess. It is believed to be 1 of the most powerful temples in the world. From my childhood I have never missed a visit to this temple for its rich heritage , serenity & peace we receive when we enter. More than that the place talks about the power of woman/mother. It is believed that an army of women headed by Chittur Amma & sister Pazhayanur Kavu went to the battle fighting against the powerful evil king Kongan when the husbands ran away leaving their children. Will write more.

Chitturkavu Devi Temple is in the township boundary of Chittur municipality about 15 km from Palakkad town. The eastern side of the ghat is known as ‘ Kongan Nadu'. At a remote time in the history of Malabar, the Kongan army entered Chittur through the mountain pass and a fierce fight followed. In the fight the people of Chittur, with the help of Chittur Goddess could defeat the Kongans. To commemorate the event every year ‘Konganpada' festival is celebrated at the Chitturkavu temple. The goddess Durga in her formidable form is the main deity of the temple. ‘Chanthattom' is the important ritualistic offering of the goddess and as a result of the incessant offering, the idol had turned in to deep black.

The legend about the divine birth of Devi Kali is as follows:- Daruka was a wicked demon. He conquered the three worlds with the miraculous boon that he obtained from Brahma. The Devas suffered much due to continual torment of the demon. Consequently, Lord Siva became angry and out of his fire of anger there existed the goddess Kali, who was entrusted with the work of killing the demon Daruka. Queen Daruki was the wife of demon and the queen of Forest And she was a devotee of Devi Parvati. The demon shumbh and nishumbha insist to Daruka to insist queen daruki to call Devi Kali ( they don't even know Parvati itself is Kali ) when queen Daruki called Devi Parvati with her devotion. Then Kali got angry with king Darukas behaviour towards women and killed him in spite of his wife's request to forgive him but he got killed as he has insulted the women. From this instance demon shumbh and...

Chittur Kavu is a complex of 2 temples. The main deity in the temple on east is Bhagavathy of nearly 6.5 feet high. There is a Ganapathy also at the right side of the entrance. The goddess is popularly known as CHITTURAMMA. The 2nd temple which is just behind the first one, is having Pazhayanur Kavu Bhagavathy as the main deity. {Old people believe that this Goddess has the chaithanya (ചൈതന്യം) of Lord Guruvayurappan / Mahavishnu}. On both sides of the hall in front of the shrine, the statues of Ashta Lakshmis are erected. There is a separate small sannithi for Sreekrishna with Rugmini. A sannithi for Ganapathy & Nagar is at the Aalthara on the east of the pradakshina vazhi. The temple has a very high flag post (കൊടിമരം).THERE IS NO OTHER TEMPLE IN PALAKKAD HAVING SUCH A HIGH FLAG-POST. The temple festival is the famous 'Chittur desa Konganpada maholsavam' which is celebrated in the malayalam month of Meenam (middle & above of March). Last time(2019), the festival was not held in detail, due to renovation works.【This festival is somewhat similar to Shurasamharam (ശൂര സംഹാരം) in Subramonya temples. Now the renovation works are over and the temples have a lively look. The temple complex has an entrance on the west side also; but east is welcome. The temples open on all days at usual temple timings. Fridays and Sundays are important. The temple is located at the starting point of Chittur town( from Palakkad side via Kodumbu) in a healthy atmosphere. Easy to access and easily noticeable with...
