Unique experience and amazing views of the valley from the caves. The hike up to the caves was added fun, lots of shops for food, drinks and shopping available all along. Recommend to take hats and sunglasses if going during noon time.

The place was truly amazing! Different parking slots were available, and a nominal fee of 20 rupees for bike parking was required at the entrance. After parking, there's about a kilometer journey to reach the assigned spot. From there, it's a challenging trek to the top where the cave is located – not for the faint-hearted. The entry charges is 50 rupees per person, advised to carry cash. The terrain is tough, and sturdy shoes are advised due to slippery roads. The descent poses a challenge with steep stairs, which could be dangerous.

However, the overall experience is worth it. The cave offers a unique visit, with lots of shops along the way for essentials. The adventure may be tough, but the scenic beauty and the sense of accomplishment make it a great experience.

Reaching the main cave was a short but steep trek, followed by stairs. It was quite enjoyable, but one must wear comfortable shoes and clothing. The route throughout has a lot of shops to buy food, drinks, and souvenirs from. the top of the hill gives a nice view of the surrounding area. Would recommend visiting it as early in the morning as possible.

No worth in visiting this place. Too much stiff slope for walking. Even after ticket counter we still have to walk 300+ steps. It will take almost half a day to cover this place. If you are on family trip you should skip this place. You can visit this place if you are in mood of trekking. There is nothing much left as a cave here just some lines as shown in attached image.

A place with an immense amount of historic remains. Eddakal caves, located in Wayanad is a proof of Neolithic settlements that date back to 6000 BCE. There are engravings on the walls that are pre historic in nature and make us to realise how much human hand evolved over time.

A must see place for anyone visiting Wayanad. If you are coming along with senior citizens, it would surely be a struggle as there is just a lot to climb and most of it is extremely steep. But it's worth the climb!

It is one of the must recommended place in the wayanad and hence is highly crowded. This place has an entry fee of Rs. 50 with an uphill hike of around 250 m. There are two caves present over each other, where the one at the top have rock carvings, rock paintings also. The view from the top of the cave is also mesmerising but the only fault was their poor crowd management. I will suggest to visit this place on weekdays.

The Edakkal Caves, nestled high in the Ambukutty Mala near Sultan Bathery in Wayanad, offer a captivating journey through prehistoric times. These aren't true caves in the geological sense, but rather natural rock shelters formed by a massive boulder straddling a fissure in the rock. What makes them truly remarkable are the ancient rock carvings that whisper tales of civilizations long past

The primary draw of Edakkal Caves are the intricate and enigmatic petroglyphs found on the cave walls. These carvings, dating back to the Neolithic and possibly even the late Stone Age, are believed to be the work of various ancient cultures. They depict human figures, animals, symbols, and tools, offering fascinating insights into the lives and beliefs of early inhabitants of the region.

The way the caves are formed – a large rock resting on two supporting boulders – is itself an interesting geological feature. The interplay of light and shadow within the shelters adds to their mystique.

The trek up to the caves, though moderately challenging, rewards visitors with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding lush green landscapes of Wayanad.

Edakkal Caves are considered a significant archaeological site, providing crucial evidence of prehistoric human habitation in the Western Ghats.

While requiring a trek, the path is generally well-maintained with steps in many sections, making it accessible to a reasonably fit individual.

Exploring the different levels and chambers of the "caves" and deciphering the ancient carvings evokes a sense of adventure and discovery.

Reaching the caves involves a trek of about 1 km uphill, which can be tiring for some. Wear comfortable footwear. Being a popular tourist destination, the caves can get crowded, especially during peak season and weekends. The interiors of the caves can be dimly lit, making it a bit challenging to see the carvings clearly in some areas.

Allocate at least 2-3 hours for the entire experience, including the trek up and down and exploring the cave.

A visit to Edakkal Caves is a unique and enriching experience. It's a chance to step back in time and witness the artistic expressions of prehistoric people while enjoying the natural beauty of Wayanad. The moderate trek is well worth the effort to explore these fascinating rock shelters and ponder the mysteries etched onto their ancient walls. It's a must-see for history enthusiasts, archaeology buffs, and anyone seeking a blend of adventure and cultural exploration.

Tourism Dept personnel available in the cave to manage the crowd . Cave timing is 8 am to 5 pm . Ticket cost is 40 INR per head . Use and Throw plastic bottles are charged 20 INR deposit.

We completed the trek from level 2 parking to top in 90 minutes. Lots of vendors available on the trekking path up to the ticket counters. Walk slowly , keep drinking water while walking...

Edakkal Caves: Stepping Back in Time in Kerala's Mystic Hills

Hidden amidst the lush green labyrinth of Wayanad's hills, the Edakkal Caves whisper tales of a time long gone. This ancient abode isn't just a geological marvel; it's a portal to prehistoric human artistry and a canvas etched with stories waiting to be unraveled. My recent expedition to Edakkal Caves was a journey through time, leaving me spellbound by its mysteries and the breathtaking beauty of its setting.

A Window into Prehistory:

Carvings that Speak Volumes: The caves' walls are adorned with petroglyphs - enigmatic carvings dating back to at least 10,000 BC. Witness intricate depictions of hunting scenes, geometric patterns, and even stick figures, offering a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of our ancestors.

Travel Through Time: As you explore the caves, imagine the hands that etched these stories, the lives that unfolded within these stone walls. Feel the weight of history and marvel at the enduring legacy of human expression.

An Archaeological Mystery: The origin and purpose of the carvings remain shrouded in mystery. Theories range from ritualistic practices to everyday life documentation, fueling the intrigue and inviting your own interpretations.

Beyond the Carvings:

While the petroglyphs are undoubtedly the highlight, Edakkal Caves offer more than just historical intrigue:

Natural Symphony: The trek to the caves itself is a treat. Wind through the dense forests, breathe in the fresh air, and listen to the symphony of birdsong that surrounds you.

Panoramic Paradise: Upon reaching the caves, be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the Wayanad hills. The panoramic views are a photographer's delight and a perfect backdrop for a picnic or simply soaking in the beauty.

Cultural Enrichment: Learn about the tribal communities who have inhabited this region for centuries. Visit the nearby museum to gain insights into their traditions and way of life.

Tips for Travelers:

The climb to the caves can be steep and challenging, so wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Carry water and snacks as there are no refreshments available at the site. Hire a guide for a deeper understanding of the petroglyphs and local history. Photography is allowed, but respect the sanctity of the site and avoid damaging the carvings.

Final Verdict:

Edakkal Caves are more than just a tourist destination; they're a unique cultural and historical experience. It's a place to connect with the past, marvel at the power of human creativity, and appreciate the stunning beauty of nature. If you're seeking adventure, mystery, and a glimpse into a bygone era, Edakkal Caves should be at the top of your...
