Read moreThe Kakkad Eco Tourism project is a serene and relatively undiscovered natural haven in the Kozhikode district, offering a genuine immersion into the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats. It is managed with a focus on conservation by the Vana Samrakshana Samithi (VSS), under the Kerala Forest Department, ensuring a sustainable and low-impact experience. Here is a detailed review of the project, with a focus on its flora and fauna diversity. Kakkad Eco Tourism Project: Detailed Review 1. Overview and Ambiance Located approximately 45 km from Kozhikode city in the Thamarassery forest range, Kakkad provides a picturesque escape into a pristine forest habitat. It is situated in the foothills of the Western Ghats, characterized by lush greenery, tranquil streams, and the invigorating sound of nature. The atmosphere is peaceful and less crowded, making it ideal for nature lovers seeking serenity. 2. Flora (Plant Diversity) The region's location within the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot, ensures a rich botanical wealth. The forest type here ranges from moist deciduous to evergreen patches, which creates a habitat for a spectacular variety of plant life. Trees and Shrubs: The core of the eco-tourism project is a dense forest, abundant with diverse native trees and undergrowth, providing a classic jungle-walk experience. Medicinal Plants: A significant highlight is the presence of a wide variety of indigenous medicinal plants and herbs. The area is a recognized storehouse of valuable botanical resources, which underscores its importance not just for tourism, but also for traditional medicine and conservation. Biodiversity Context: The broader Thamarassery forest range houses facilities like the nearby Vanaparvam Biodiversity Park, which provides context for the region's immense floral wealth, including: Hundreds of species of plants. Various types of bamboo saplings. Different varieties of orchids. For enthusiasts, the chance to walk amidst such dense, natural flora and identify herbal plants is a major draw. 3. Fauna (Wildlife Diversity) While the focus is on a low-impact nature walk experience, the forest is a vibrant ecosystem that supports a good range of local wildlife, particularly smaller species crucial to forest health. Birds: Kakkad is an excellent spot for birdwatching. The lush canopy and proximity to water bodies attract a variety of bird species. Early morning or late afternoon walks are the best times for spotting local and migratory birds. Butterflies and Insects: The abundance of flowering plants and streams makes Kakkad a haven for butterflies. Visitors will often encounter a wide assortment of colorful butterflies fluttering through the undergrowth, adding a dynamic layer to the forest trail. Animals: Visitors may spot various smaller animals and insects. The jungle habitat suggests the presence of common forest-dwelling fauna, though it is not a destination known for large mammal sightings. 4. Activities and Attractions The main attractions at Kakkad Eco Tourism revolve around experiencing the natural landscape firsthand: Jungle Walk/Nature Walk: A well-maintained walkway leads visitors through evergreen forest patches, offering a quiet, sensory experience. Streams and Waterfalls: The presence of several waterfalls and small lakes/streams is a major draw. The water is often noted for being cool and refreshing, even in the summer, making it a perfect spot for forest bathing and relaxation. Trekking: For the more adventurous, there are opportunities for trekking to higher points like Kumban Hill and Athikkode Hill, which offer views and a more rigorous exploration of the forest terrain. Children's Park: A small park area is available, making it a family-friendly destination where children can also enjoy the natural...
Read moreVery bad experience with the staffs. It was never mentioned that the ticket counter closes at 4pm and the security was very harsh towards us. We saw on google maps the place closes at 5pm. We somehow managed to get to the place by 3:45pm, and the security kept on mentioning that the counter is closing soon. Suddenly it started pouring and we waited 5minutes for the rain to slow down and when we went to take the ticket, he was like one hour ain’t enough for you to see the place, you should spend at least three hours! Bro; I have been to the place before and I know it’s hardly an hour to go around the place and nothing much to see, but if i wish i can spend hours in the nature! His attitude seemed like he doesn’t want to sell us the tickets! We backed off and went home! I would seriously insist on them to add all these informations on the google or any platform so that people know this before coming here! If they dont wish to sell the tickets post 4pm, let them mention the closing time as 4pm and not 5pm!!! Who can visit a place that closes at 5pm and the ticket counter closes at 4pm when they reach the place after 4pm?? If the counter closes at 4pm, the place is no longer open beyond that! It’s as simple as that!!! The rest one hour is just the time for the securities to shoot the people out, that time doesn’t need to be mentioned as everyone knows the security will start doing their job before closing!!! I repeat, when the counter closes at 4pm, the place is closed!!!! SIMPLE!! And the hell with the security’s attitude?? Shouldn’t he at least be polite with the people that travels hours...
