Kakkathuruthu, Alappuzha: A Timeless Island of Tranquility

Date of Visit: 14th December 2024

Tucked away in the serene backwaters of Alappuzha, Kakkathuruthu is a tiny island that seems to have paused in time, offering an enchanting escape from the chaos of modern life. This lesser-known gem, located in the Ezhupunna Panchayat, has earned global recognition after being featured in National Geographic’s Around the World in 24 Hours for having one of the world’s best sunsets. Experiencing this spectacle firsthand was an unforgettable moment during our visit.

A Journey to Tranquility Reaching Kakkathuruthu is an adventure in itself. The island is accessible only by country boats, which enhances the charm of the journey. As we glided across the vast waters of the Vembanad Lake, the calm ripples and soft rustle of the wind set the tone for the experience that awaited us.

The island, just 3 km long and 2 km wide, greeted us with a rustic charm that felt like stepping into a living postcard. Surrounded by swaying coconut palms, verdant paddy fields, and scenic narrow roads, the beauty of the place was truly mesmerizing.

A Photographer’s Paradise Every corner of Kakkathuruthu offers a picture-perfect frame. Whether it’s the sight of ducks frolicking in small ponds, migratory birds perched gracefully on trees, or the locals engaging in daily activities, the island breathes life into its serene surroundings. As the sun began to set, the sky turned into a breathtaking canvas of colors, casting a golden glow over the lake and the island. This sunset—hailed as one of the best in the world—was the highlight of our visit, leaving us spellbound.

Island Life and Simplicity Walking through Kakkathuruthu is like traveling back in time. The residents here lead a simple yet fulfilling life, deeply connected to nature. Fishing is a common activity, and the warm smiles of the locals made us feel welcomed. The island is also home to an Ayurveda hospital and an Anganwadi, showcasing its self-sufficient and sustainable way of life.

Interestingly, unlike other islands in the region, Kakkathuruthu doesn’t submerge during heavy rains, making it a unique haven for both people and migratory birds.

Peace and Relaxation in Nature’s Lap What sets Kakkathuruthu apart is its ability to make you forget the concept of time. The calm atmosphere, the soft hum of nature, and the absence of modern distractions create a therapeutic environment. It’s a place where you can sit by the lake, watch the world slow down, and feel utterly at peace.

Practical Information Nearest railway station: Ezhuppunna (4 km) Nearest airport: Cochin International Airport (50 km) Final Thoughts Kakkathuruthu is more than just an island—it’s a world of its own. For those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle, this hidden paradise offers an unmatched blend of natural beauty and cultural charm. Whether you’re a traveler, photographer, or someone in search of peace, this island will leave you rejuvenated and longing to return.

If you ever find yourself in Alappuzha, don’t miss the chance to visit Kakkathuruthu. It’s a journey worth taking and a destination worth cherishing.

Highlights: Stunning sunset views, peaceful atmosphere, and a rustic...

Located at about 25km from fort Kochi and 35km from Alleppey, Kakkathuruthu island is an island which is about 3km long and 1km wide, in the Ashtamudi lake. It got its name from the group of crows which regularly used to visit the island for shelter. Being surrounded by water, boat service is the only means of transit to the island. The govt. provides free boat service from mainland to the island. The place is of serene beauty as it is almost untouched by development. It has 2 temples and about 150 houses. The only public sector medical service provided is a govt. Ayurveda hospital which functions for about 8 hours a day. Other boating services are available starting from Rs. 800. A medium sized house was under construction, facing the lake, which the people told to be used as a resort in future.

The most beautiful thing about kakkathuruthu island is its sunset view. Sunset at kakkathuruthu has been listed by National Geographic channel under the "Top 10 places to visit before you die" feature. You may check it...

Kakkathuruthu

Kakkathuruthu, a tiny island in Kerala’s backwaters, has been listed in National Geographic’ s ‘Around the World in 24 Hours,’ a photographic tour of travel-worthy spots in the world.

Visit Kakkathuruthu village and Kaithapuzha Lake and must say that it is such a blissful location and absolutely serene. Visit the beautiful islands and watch the village life. Had loads of fun with activities like fishing, kayaking, pedal boating and shikara boating for hours in Kaithapuzha Lake which is surrounded by palm fringe , coconut trees and greenery all around. The place is like a small piece of heaven on earth. Winded up the noon Lunch with some spicy crab dishes, fish fry and prawns roast in a lake side food court and the food is just awesome and sumptuous. Entire evening spent on the pristine backwater and cruising with Tea and Banana fritters. Watch the beautiful sunset...

The feature article in Deccan chronicle about National Geographic Channel mentioning a small island kinda place as the best place in the world to be at 6p.m if one happens to travel around the world in 24 hours took me here, along with my family. And the sunset is really a refreshing experience as always. But apart from this there is nothing much to make this a must go place. The hospitality of the people is very lovely. They treated us with so much care having come to see their small island. For people who want to follow their heart on an exploration spree, this twilight is a different choice.

Its a calm, quiet and beautiful place. If you are a nature lover then you will surely like this. And if are willing to walk around this Island, there are more beautiful sceneries. The most highlighting thing in this Island is the boat rinding around the lake and the sunset view. If you are a nature lover or a photographer then you must visit this place. Make sure you are visiting this place in a sunny day, because rain can ruin your entire trip in this Island.

Such a lovely place to go to spent beautiful evenings. It's simply magical when when the sun's light reflects when it's about to set! Local people will take you for a ride through the river in small boats, you just have to pay them if they ask you to. There's a toddy shop and the food there is really spicy and tasty 😋
