Date of Visit: 14th December 2024
Tucked away in the serene backwaters of Alappuzha, Kakkathuruthu is a tiny island that seems to have paused in time, offering an enchanting escape from the chaos of modern life. This lesser-known gem, located in the Ezhupunna Panchayat, has earned global recognition after being featured in National Geographic’s Around the World in 24 Hours for having one of the world’s best sunsets. Experiencing this spectacle firsthand was an unforgettable moment during our visit.
A Journey to Tranquility Reaching Kakkathuruthu is an adventure in itself. The island is accessible only by country boats, which enhances the charm of the journey. As we glided across the vast waters of the Vembanad Lake, the calm ripples and soft rustle of the wind set the tone for the experience that awaited us.
The island, just 3 km long and 2 km wide, greeted us with a rustic charm that felt like stepping into a living postcard. Surrounded by swaying coconut palms, verdant paddy fields, and scenic narrow roads, the beauty of the place was truly mesmerizing.
A Photographer’s Paradise Every corner of Kakkathuruthu offers a picture-perfect frame. Whether it’s the sight of ducks frolicking in small ponds, migratory birds perched gracefully on trees, or the locals engaging in daily activities, the island breathes life into its serene surroundings. As the sun began to set, the sky turned into a breathtaking canvas of colors, casting a golden glow over the lake and the island. This sunset—hailed as one of the best in the world—was the highlight of our visit, leaving us spellbound.
Island Life and Simplicity Walking through Kakkathuruthu is like traveling back in time. The residents here lead a simple yet fulfilling life, deeply connected to nature. Fishing is a common activity, and the warm smiles of the locals made us feel welcomed. The island is also home to an Ayurveda hospital and an Anganwadi, showcasing its self-sufficient and sustainable way of life.
Interestingly, unlike other islands in the region, Kakkathuruthu doesn’t submerge during heavy rains, making it a unique haven for both people and migratory birds.
Peace and Relaxation in Nature’s Lap What sets Kakkathuruthu apart is its ability to make you forget the concept of time. The calm atmosphere, the soft hum of nature, and the absence of modern distractions create a therapeutic environment. It’s a place where you can sit by the lake, watch the world slow down, and feel utterly at peace.
