About Kerala ... Kalipara: A Spectrum of Blue Hues Published in Newsletter Issue No. 325 - September 2020

Close your eyes and the silence thrums around you. Only the sound of the wind disturbs it. There is a gentle, cool nip in the air. At 1200 ft., when you are at the crest of this wonderfully secluded hill, and the thick mist thatenvelopes the peak drifts away, you are dazzled by a spectrum of blue hues you never knew existed.

Kalipara is Thiruvananthapuram's best-kept secret, ravishing you with a stunning 360-degree view of the city. This is where you get to watch the sun peep over the horizon, its first rays opening up the sky, and you enjoy the first colours of dawn. Arriving here is an adventure in itself, hiking up the rocky side of the hill.

The trail towards the peak is steep and you need to manoeuvre some tricky pathways. Once you trek uphill and reach the peak, you get a bird’s-eye view of Thiruvananthapuram. The ravishing sweep of land in front of you is still only the microcosm of the city.

Kalipara offers a magnificent spectacle of the lush peaks of the Western Ghats on one side and the horizon of the Arabian Sea on the other. Once here, keep your eyes peeled for every landmark in the city. It is unlike any other place in the capital, and is truly the ideal place to retreat to yourself, to complete peace and solitude.

The idyllic locale offers the ultimate reboot for your soul. It is one of those rare places where you can watch the sunset and the sunrise in their full glory. It also houses an ancient temple – the Sree KaliparaLokambika Temple. According to local lore, the deity used to be worshipped by the Kani tribe who dwelled in the mountains. Now the temple is frequented by believers from far and wide, and the site is noted for its sylvan...

Kalipara View Point is one of the best 360-degree viewpoints in Trivandrum. On a clear day, you can see Agasthyarkoodam clearly from the top. There is a small temple at the peak, which makes the place feel calm and peaceful. It is close to Neyyar Dam, so if you are visiting Neyyar, this spot is worth adding to your plan, especially for watching the sunset.

The view from the top is really beautiful. The climb is short but slightly steep, so it may be difficult for those who are not used to walking uphill. The temple is built on a big rock, just like Agasthyarkoodam. There are a few metal rods fixed along the path to hold for support, but in some parts you may need to be a little careful. If you are fit, you can reach the top in about 10 minutes without much effort.

From Kallikkadu, take the Amboori route instead of turning towards Neyyar to reach here. You can also come through the Neyyar Dam side, but cars cannot go all the way up. Once you reach the top, you get a great view, you can see Ponmudi, Bonacaud, Agasthyarkoodam, and Neyyar Dam from one place.

It’s better not to visit during rainy days as the path becomes slippery. The evening sunset is very beautiful, similar to Sasthampara. If you reach around 5 PM, you can enjoy the sunset and return before it gets dark. After sunset, the path down becomes a bit difficult.

Overall, it’s a peaceful and scenic spot to visit, perfect for watching the sunset and enjoying nature...

Lokambika Temple is situated on a rock called Kalipara, located approx 30-35km from Trivandrum(5 km from Neyyar Dam). This temple is truly an unexplored gem for travellers. The view around the temple is really amazing.

Visit Kalipara early mornig for the mesmerizing view of sunrise. Sunrise from Kalipara is an amazing experience and will take you to another world of serenity. Try to reach there 20-25 minutes before the sunrise or sunset time.Because you have to climb up for 10-15minutes. Keep water (go green). Avoid visiting during monsoon. Best place in Trivandrum to watch sunrise. Please be calm and enjoy the place. The view of Neyyar dam, Western ghats, Agasthyamala and also the panoramic view of Thiruvananthapuram will make Kalipara unforgettable. No ticket charge for visitors and parking. Car parking...
