Kidangoor Sree Subramanyaswami Temple — Attraction in Kerala

A famous temple of Sree Bala Subrahmanya swamy at Kidangoor, Kottayam dist. Kerala. It is believed that this temple was initially a Vishnu temple and later the idol of Sree Balasubrahmanian was put as the main deity of the temple. Now Vishnu is placed in another Sreekovil of the same status inside Nalambalam itself. Darsan to east direction. Subdeity: Lord Sasthavu.

An old separate Sreekrishna temple also is there outside the temple compound at North gate.

Koothambalam of Kidangoor is very famous and Goddess Mahamaya is placed inside. One of the pillar inside Koothambalam is made with wood from 'Kurumthotty' is a unique thing specifically Kurumthotty is grown as a plant has some Ayurveda medicinal values and used for Ayurvedic treatment in Kerala. Sreekovils of Subrahmanian and Vishnu are squre in shape and roofing with copper sheets. Flag mast is gold covered.

Festival: 10days festival with flag hoisting on Karthika day of Kumbham. Thaipooyam in the month of Makaram and Shashti days also are important celebrations.

Another temple for Mahaganapathi is there now at the west nada with entrance to the main parking ground. This is comparativly a new temple of around 30-40 years old. Sreedurga, Sreebhadra, Navagraha and Naga are the subdeities in this Ganapathi temple.

Facility: Main approach road is at the west side of the temple and a parking ground for reasonable nos of Vehicles is available there.

Location/Travel: The temple is in Kidangoor, a small town in the State Highway of Kottayam-Pala route around 10km from Pala and 20km from Kottayam. The temple is by the side of Kidangoor-Manarcaud road just 1km from Kidangoor junction. Nearest main Railway station is Kottayam. Myth/History. Meenachil river is flowing by the north side of the temple and there is a myth that Subrahmanya swamy came through the river to this place. However, the name of the Meenachil river itself is derived from it's Tamil connection of Meenakshiyaru/Meenachiyaru. Initially during vedic periods, this river was named as Gownaru/Kavanaru, and later after inhabitation of People from Tamilnadu at Poonjar and the downstream areas of this river, it was called as Meenakshiyaru in connection with Madurai Meenakshi. It is believed that Poonjar Palace/Kovilakam is a branch of Pandya dynasty. Later the name Meenakshiyaru was further polished and renamed as Meenachilaru (Meenachil river) and the place surrounded was named as Meenachil. So establishing a Balasubrahmanya swamy temple in the downstream place of Meenachil river at Kidangoor also may be the result of this Tamil enriched civilization.

Things to be noted: Women are not allowed to enter inside Nalambalam. They are allowed to worship the Deity from Balickalpura only. Hence men are also not entered through the main door infront of Subrahmanya swami, instead they are entering inside the Nalambalam through the gate infront of Lord Vishnu. This custom is followed as part of restrictions with respect to the age and costumes of the assumed Deity Subrahmanya swamy.

കിടങ്ങൂർ ക്ഷേത്രചരിത്രം ഗൗണ മഹർഷിയുടെ കഠിനതപസ്സിൽ സംപ്രീതനായ പരമശിവൻ സമസ്ത ലോകങ്ങളുടെയും ഐശ്വര്യത്തിനായി സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ വിഗ്രഹം നൽകി അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു സന്തുഷ്ടനായ ഗണ മഹർഷി സഹ്യ സാനുക്കളിൽ താമസിച്ച് സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനെ പൂജിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി. രാവണ നിഗ്രഹത്തിനു ശേഷം വിജയശ്രീലാളിതനായ ശ്രീരാമൻ അയോധ്യ യാത്ര മധ്യേ തന്റെ ആശ്രമത്തിൽ എത്തും എന്ന് കരുതിയ ഗൗണ മഹർഷി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആദരിക്കുന്നതിനായി തന്റെ കമണ്ഡലുവിൽ തീർത്ഥം നിറച്ച് കാത്തിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ശ്രീരാമനെ കാണായ്കയാൽ കോപിഷ്ഠനായ മഹർഷി തന്റെ കമണ്ഡലു തട്ടി മറിക്കുകയും അതിൽ നിന്നും തീർത്ഥം ഒഴുകി ഗൗണ നദിയായി ആയി രൂപം പ്രാപിച്ചു സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ തേജസ്സോടെ ഒപ്പം കിടങ്ങൂരിൽ എത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. കിടങ്ങൂരിൽ അന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്ന മഹാവിഷ്ണുക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ വിഷ്ണുവിനു വേണ്ടി പുതിയ ശ്രീകോവിൽ പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു പിറ്റേദിവസം പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടക്കേണ്ട ഇവിടെ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സാന്നിധ്യം തിരിച്ചറിയുകയും ഒഴുകിവന്ന സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ തേജസ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ തന്നെ ഉണ്ട് എന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അങ്ങനെ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ തെക്കുഭാഗത്തുള്ള പുതിയ ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യന്റെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തി.

മീനച്ചിലാറിലൂടെ കച്ചവടത്തിനായി വള്ളത്തിൽ ഉപ്പ് കൊണ്ടു പോകുകയായിരുന്ന മാവേലി വീട്ടിൽ കാരണവർ കിടങ്ങൂർ പ്രദേശത്ത് എത്തിയപ്പോൾ ഒരാൾ വള്ളത്തിൽ നിന്ന് താഴേക്ക് ചാടുന്ന കണ്ടുവെന്നും പ്രശ്നവശാൽ ഇത് ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ആണെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ് വിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനുള്ളിലെ പുനപ്രതിഷ്ഠക്കായി ഒരുക്കിയിരുന്ന പുതിയ ശ്രീ കോവിലിൽ കുടിയിരുത്തി എന്നും ഒരു ഐതിഹ്യമുണ്ട് . പല ദേശവഴികളിൽ നിന്നും എത്തുന്ന വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ തൊട്ടു ശുദ്ധമാക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള അവകാശം അങ്ങനെ മാവേലി കുടുംബത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു എന്നാണ് കേട്ടുകേൾവി. രാത്രിയിൽ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ തേജസ് പുതിയ ശ്രീകോവിലിനുള്ളിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ചപ്പോൾ മേച്ചേരിൽ മാരാർക്ക് ഒരു സ്വപ്നദർശനം ലഭിച്ചുവെന്നും അങ്ങനെ അദ്ദേഹം വീട്ടിൽ തന്നെയിരുന്ന് രാത്രി ശംഖ്‌ വിളിച്ചെന്നും ഒരു ഐതിഹ്യമുണ്ട്.

ചരിത്രം ഏതാണ്ട് മൂവായിരത്തോളം വർഷം പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥാവകാശം കിടങ്ങൂർ ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ 14 ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുടുംബങ്ങൾക്ക് ആയിരുന്നു , കൊങ്ങോർപള്ളി ഓണിയപ്പുലം,നെല്ലിപ്പുഴ,കല്ലമ്പള്ളി,വടവാമന,ചെറുവള്ളി,ഓശ്ശേരി,മാധവപ്പള്ളി,മലമേൽ,മുര്യോത്തുമലമേൽ,മുളവേലിപ്പുറം,തുരുത്തി,ചാലത്തുരുത്തി,മധുരഞ്ചി എന്നീ ഇല്ലങ്ങളിൽ മധുരംചിറ ഇല്ലത്തിൽ പുരുഷ സന്താനങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലായ്മയാണ് അന്യംനിന്നു പോവുകയും അങ്ങനെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥാവകാശം ഇന്നത്തെ അവസ്ഥയിൽ 13 ഇല്ലങ്ങളിൽ നിക്ഷിപ്തമാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. കേരളത്തിലെ 64 നമ്പൂതിരി ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിൽ സാമം,ഋക്ക്,യജുസ്സ് എന്നീ മൂന്നു വേദങ്ങളിലും പെട്ട നമ്പൂതിരിമാർ വാഴുന്ന ഏക ഗ്രാമമാണ് കിടങ്ങൂർ, വേദാഭ്യസനം നിർബന്ധം ആയിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് വേദങ്ങൾ അഭ്യസിച്ച് പിഴകൂടാതെ ചൊല്ലി "സഭ" എന്ന് അപൂർവ പദവി നേടിയ പണ്ഡിത ശ്രേഷ്ഠന്മാർ കിടങ്ങൂരിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു .മൂന്നു വേദങ്ങളും ഒരുപോലെ അഭ്യസിച്ച കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരേ ഒരു ത്രിവേദി ആയിത്തീർന്ന മലമേൽ ഇല്ലത്ത് ബ്രഹ്മശ്രീ നാരായണൻ നമ്പൂതിരിയും കിടങ്ങൂർ ഗ്രാമക്കാരൻ തന്നെ. കേരളത്തിലെ പല നമ്പൂതിരി കുടുംബങ്ങളുടെയും ആചാര്യ സ്ഥാനവും കിടങ്ങൂർ ഗ്രാമക്കാർക്ക് തന്നെ . ആരംഭകാലത്ത് ചെറിയ ക്ഷേത്രം മാത്രമായിരുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ ഗ്രാമത്തലവന്മാരായിരുന്ന ദേശാധിപന്മാർ പ്രത്യേക താൽപര്യം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച് നവീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് . ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ രൂപവും ഭാവവും, ഭംഗിയും ,എല്ലാം കൈവരിച്ചത് പഴയ തെക്കുംകൂർ രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ സഹായത്താലാണ് .തെക്കുംകൂർ തിരുവിതാംകൂറിനോട് ചേരുന്നതിനു മുൻപ് മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ മഹാരാജാവ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലും കൊങ്ങോർപ്പള്ളി ഇല്ലത്തും വന്നു താമസിച്ചതായി രേഖകളുണ്ട്. അതിനുശേഷം ധർമ്മരാജാവിന്റെ കാലത്ത് തൃക്കിടങ്ങൂരപ്പന്റെ തിടമ്പ് വർഷങ്ങളോളം ഏറ്റിയ കിടങ്ങൂർ കണ്ടങ്കോരൻ എന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധനായ ആനയെ ശ്രീ പത്മനാഭസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഒറ്റക്കൽ മണ്ഡപം പണിയുന്നതിനുള്ള കല്ല് പിടിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് കൊണ്ടു പോവുകയും അവിടെവച്ചു ചരിയുകയും ചെയ്തു . അതിന്റെ പ്രായശ്ചിത്തമായി രാജാവ് പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചതാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ വലിയ ഊട്ടുപുര കൊട്ടാരത്തിലെ ചിലവിൽ ആ വർഷം മുതൽ പട്ടത്താനം ഇവിടെ നടത്തുവാനും ഉത്തരവിട്ടു. കുറച്ചു വർഷം മുൻപുവരെ പട്ടത്താനം അതിഗംഭീരമായി ഇവിടെ നടന്നിരുന്നു. 14 ഊരാണ്മ കുടുംബങ്ങളിലെ പല പ്രഗത്ഭന്മാരും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭരണാധികാരിയായി സേവനമനുഷ്ടിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. മലമേൽ ഇല്ലത്ത് വലിയ കൃഷ്ണൻ മുത്തപ്ഫൻ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ബ്രഹ്മശ്രീ കൃഷ്ണൻ നമ്പൂതിരി അനേകവർഷം ഭരണാധികാരിയായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുകയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പുരോഗതിക്കായി അഹോരാത്രം പരിശ്രമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട് .കിടങ്ങൂർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഇന്നു കാണുന്ന സ്വർണക്കുട അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സംഭാവനയാണ്. ആറാട്ടു ദിവസം എഴുന്നള്ളത്തോട് കൂടിയ ശ്രീ ബലിക്ക് തുടക്കമിട്ടത് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ...

OM SARAVANA BHAVA 🙏🙏🙏 Lord Subrahmanya is worshipped here in his 'Brahmachari Bhava' Estimated to be at least 1500 years old, the Subrahmanya Swami Temple in Kidangoor is noteworthy for its unique rituals and remarkable architecture. Lord Subrahmanya, the eponymous presiding deity of the temple, is venerated here as 'Thrikidangoorappan'.

Lord Subrahmanya is worshipped here in his 'Brahmachari Bhava' (celibate form). It is believed that the Lord treats all women who enter the temple as his mother and as a son, it is his duty to stand up and greet her with respect. In order to avoid this situation, women are not permitted to enter the 'Nalambalam'.

The sculptural work inside the 'Koothambalam' (temple theatre) is exceptional because of its adherence to Bharata Muni's concept of Natya Shastra. Perumthachan, the legendary master carpenter, is believed to be the architect behind the construction of this theatre. Scenes from the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata are carved beautifully here.
